When is the last time any one has refered to an american Indain as a Redskin disparagingly or otherwise?? Until some people started crying how it was a racial slur, the only thing most people thought of when they heard the word redskin was our football team.

If you have to be told you should feel bad about a word, or that you should feel bad using a word,.... Just maybe the word wasnt so bad after all.

Never that I'm aware of. I don't feel that the name needs to be changed to pacify the PC crowd. However, if the Native American community felt it was derogatory (which apparently they don't) then I could support the change.

And again I have to say... if you have to be told you should be offended by a word, then the word wasnt really offensive to begin with.

OK. Not sure what your point is.

My point is simple. People are screaming to make the word Redskins into a racial slur when it has not been considered as such for more than 80 years. No one has used the term redskin as a racial slur in more than 100 years. And at the end of the day, the concept of trying to force societal thinking by legal means is absurd. Just like banning the N word, making it illegal to say wont change how ignorant people feel. And at the end of the day I really believe this is all about money in any case.

I couldn't agree more.

Awards and honors

Costas has won eight National Sportcaster of the Year awards from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He was inducted into that organization's Hall of Fame in 2012. He has also won four Sportscaster of the Year awards from the American Sportscasters Association and nearly twenty Sports Emmy Awards for outstanding sports announcing.
In 1999 he was a recipient of the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Basketball Hall of Fame, which is awarded to members of the electronic and print media for outstanding contributions to the sport.
In 1995 he received a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.[49]
In 2000 he won a TV Guide Award for Favorite Sportscaster.[50]
He was selected as the Dick Schaap Award for Outstanding Journalism recipient in 2004.
In 2006 he was also awarded an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Loyola College in Maryland.
In 2012 he was awarded the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism.
He is an honorary trustee of Webster University, a private college located in Webster Groves, Missouri. He is a frequent supporter of the school, to include numerous radio commercials.
He is also an honorary board member of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation

So the fact that this guy won some media awards (undeserved in my opinion but so be it) makes him qualified to speak on behalf of Native Americans and makes him an authority on the naming of a team? Huh? I view the guy as a pompous windbag along with several others of his ilk. He is grandstanding for the same reason as others - to bring attention to himself - nothing more. Most of this is very self centered & really has nothing to do with the rights of Native Americans.

I just hope that whichever politicians are screaming for a name change are not the same ones getting free Redskins tickets or other perks from the organization. If so - the team should clearly point them out and let fans do as they wish to these hypocrites.

wait wait wait , senators and congressman get perks to go to redskins games (or sell them ) and yet they bash the team name ?

that cant be !!

that would be like mike wise covering a team (and making money from it ) that is racist ?

or having that name on high school teams all through your states and not do anything about it ?

or saying that oaklahoma and indiana and indianapolis are OK and not demeaning

that cant be socal because we all know politicians are generally all about fixing real problems :laugh3::laugh3:

To say that Bob Costas is an idiot is well, ya know...looks sorta stupid. That is why I posted it.
I will cut you some slack as you probably did not read what some of the earlier posters wrote in this thread.
As for what you believe on him winning his 8 sportscaster of the year awards or the others, I won't get into it.
He does not shy away from the main stream issues. Never has. Is that grandstanding? Your opinion.

Now I do disagree with Costas on the Redskins name issue, but many Redskins fans don't take into consideration the guilt that many feel about the name. Most of these people did not grow up loving the Redskins and what the name stands for to us Redskins fans. I respect his opinion, and I hope he learns to change it one day. If he doesn't, I won't lose any sleep.

Currently my largest concern is that some very vocal individuals are declaring in public forums and media outlets that, 'of course the name redskin is racially insensitive' as if this is an accepted statement by the majority of people in the US.

This is very savvy politicking as This has YET to be determined, except for those saying it. Where are the polls supporting THEIR view? I only see bashing of current polls that indicate the exact opposite sentiment within the Native American community.

And the skins tweet campaign last week? Not helping. Smh. :L

Forgetting the politicians, wouldn't it be something like this?

Skins fans supporting the name, 95 %.
NFL fans supporting the name, 75 %
Non NFL fans supporting the name, 5 %

Since there hasn't been a poll, who knows? :noidea:

But I highly doubt that the non NFL fans would be that low, if a poll was ever actually done by the anti redskin name folk.

However, I know that there was a relatively (would like it done again myself) recent poll for Native Americans that found them in the 70 to 80% pro for the name. Which should be weighted appropriately in this discussion.

You are probably right. My non football fan demographic is vague though. Tough to really say.

Yup. As I noted earlier, this lack of a real poll by opposition is baffling. Maybe it's because there is no poll that has supported the claims by any great margin. :noidea:

The lack of another poll is actually not shocking at all. If they were to do a poll and the results came back and said the majority of the populace didnt think the name should be change, it would take alot of steam out of the debate.
