wow. been following this thread from afar and for some stupid reason giving him a small benefit of the doubt (dunno why, hate the penguins and hate cooke, maybe because he seemed like a nice guy on 24/7), but that hit was even worse than i imagined it might be.

not sure why somebody doesn't put cooke in his place. would be worth a game misconduct for someone like brashear to pound him into the ice.

this is why fighting needs to stay in the game. when the league doesn't have the balls to deal with this then someone needs to take charge.

Why stop at through the ice, why not pound him into the concrete below the ice?

Because he's not worth that much effort?

If I could supply you with the force of certain players punches and then you could run the calculations of how much effort it would take to pound him into the concrete, could I then make my decision?

seriously, every wings fan on here knows what i'm talking about when i say darren mccarty wouldn't put up with this shit.

fuck it. it's worth whatever suspension comes to teach this guy a lesson. he has no problem pulling this crap on the ice because he knows the rules are written so that no one will come after him. no way he takes runs at guys if he's busy looking over his shoulder for a guy ready to drop the gloves and just fuckin destroy him.

yes, into the fiery core of the earth.

Yes.

My hypothesis, though, is that a few good shots are all it will take before it reaches overkill. Maybe just cracking the ice. I have a sneaking suspicion he'd be dead at that point anyway.

Look, I'm not trying to pick on Johnny here (I like your posts), but I believe this is the MASSIVE logical fallacy that many of you seem to buy into.

Fighting IS in the league, and this stuff has been happening all year. Guys like Cooke clearly don't care about fighting and/or can walk away from the fight in many instances. Whatever the reason, fighting is clearly NOT a deterrent to preventing dirty hits b/c they keep happening and seemingly at a particularly bad clip this year (a year when fights are up).

What the league needs is a severe, objective, and consistent policy of suspensions and EXPULSIONS that will keep players from doing these types of things. Fighting does not prevent hits, it merely add more injury to injury. And if players show they are not deterred by those polices... they need to not be allowed to play hockey any longer!!

All that said, I don't want anyone to fight Matt Cooke. I want them to spear him in the eye with their stick. Code of Hammurabi...

he doesn't need to be dead. just needs to have an old-fashioned face rearrangement by a well rounded fist.

I should have expected that response. I get foiled by math once again (shakes fist)

it all comes down to the player policing themselves. unfortunately with the instigator rule, it's a lot harder to do

i agree with your post. but a face re-arrangement plus a suspension might just be enough to send a message.

either way, doesn't change the fact that the league has no contents in their collective nutsak.

+1

2 games here are there neither sends a message nor gives players any incentive to change any pattern of behavior.

How many games has Matt Cooke played? 900?

I think that'll be a sufficient suspension.

=)

difference is the instigator.
Cooke currently has the choice of only fighting when he agrees to.

If he knows that he is going to get utterly shitkicked by someone who knows how, if he is an idiot on the ice, maybe he thinks twice after a few times. maybe not, considering nothing else seems to have worked... but the theory is sound.

It seems to me head shots and dirty play has gone up since the instigator penalty was introduced.Like postmaster said I don't recall Lemeiux taking A run at another redwing after answering to McCarty.
