“It’s interesting, I go from being one of the younger guys on the team to being one of the older guys on the team. I hope I bring leadership, experience and the ability to be approached. You know, if guys have anything they want to talk about, whether it’s on the field stuff or off the field stuff, ‘Hey, come talk to me.’ I’m one of those guys who is easy to get along with. … I think mostly you lead by example. I’m a very visual guy, and guys see me with a smile on my face no matter what the situation is. I’m pretty easy going and just enjoy being at the ballpark. I spent the first couple of days here in St. Lucie just, sort of, measuring everybody. And everybody seems very loose and relaxed, energetic, but also focused.”
Granderson said he wants to see the Mets have a plan, execute it, out hustle the opposition and focus on winning games in the NL East.

Man, Granderson is saying all the right things already. I love it.

Also, thin DeGrom is gonna be a nice arm out of the bullpen and he has some sick flow! haha

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Closer Bobby Parnell's next bullpen session will wait further.

Parnell, returning from surgery to address a herniated disk in his neck, injured his left quadriceps muscle covering first base during a drill Thursday. He was not outdoors with teammates for Friday's morning stretching, but pitching coach Dan Warthen said: "Everyone thinks it's very, very mild. He wanted to throw today."

Parnell, trying to be cautious, threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Tuesday. He had been listed to throw again Thursday, but decided to wait an extra day to be safe as he returns from surgery. Now, that will be delayed slightly further.

Terry Collins said he hopes Parnell throws the bullpen session Saturday. Collins labeled the issue "tightness."

Mets offered Drew 1/9.5M, he turned it down.

The Mets offered a one-year, $9.5 million deal to free-agent Stephen Drew, but he’s still looking for more money and years (Heyman, Feb. 21).

I think he is WAY overplaying his hand...just ask Nelson Cruz. At least Cruz had the option to make more money as a DH.

Yupp, he put himself in a hole, declining those 2-3 year offers and had to settle for 1 year at 8M. Which, I'm upset is only 1M more than we gave Young.

Can't we just turn the page on that guy and move on already, FFS??

Sheeeeesh.

I really hope this motivates Ruben Tejada, so he plays with a chip on his shoulder and sticks it to all his detractors.......and something tells me he's gonna do just that.

LGM!!!

Busting it: TC was ecstatic with the intensity of the first full-squad workout Saturday.

“I have never seen the drills done with more enthusiasm, with more energy and without major mistakes than we have in the last six days,” Collins said. “It’s incredible.”

Believe me, I hope he does, but I just don't see it.

That was my first thought too, but then I realized we don't need another lousy outfielder, and this isn't a hitters park like Arlington or Camden. It would have been worth taking a chance, I guess, but I'm not too pissed about it.

As for Drew, if we do end up signing this jerkoff, he better play perfect D to offset that "All Star" .253 average of his.

All Star...:laugh3::laugh3::laugh3:

Mets RHP prospect Rafael Montero will start the team’s first Grapefruit League game against the Nationals this Friday in St. Lucie.

John Lannan will start the next game, followed by Diasuke Matsuzaka on Sunday, Noah Syndergaard on Monday, Jon Niese on Tuesday and Bartolo Colon on Wednesday.

Montero, Lannan and Matsuzaka are competing for the last spot in the team’s rotation.

Excited to see Montero and Thor pitch!

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Mets drafted catcher Kevin Plawecki with the 35th overall pick in the 2012 draft in large part because he reflected their organizational hitting philosophy.

In fact, during his final season at Purdue, Plawecki had a .445 on-base percentage while striking out only eight times in 223 at-bats.

Kevin Plawecki has impressed Terry Collins so far in camp.

Plawecki, in camp as a non-roster invite, has impressed Terry Collins so far with his bat. Now, the manager is eager to see Plawecki's catching skills once Grapefruit League play begins next weekend.

"I'd like to see him catch, because just watching him in BP, he has a clue," Collins said. "He squares it up pretty good. And it's loud. So I'm real impressed with what I've seen at the plate. I'd like to see him catch and throw a little bit. You know, this guy came from a major college program. Player of the Year in the Big Ten, that's a pretty big statement."

The Mets received some criticism for leaving Plawecki at low-A Savannah so long last season, given his college experience and success. He hit .314 with a .390 on-base percentage in 65 games with the Gnats before a promotion to St. Lucie. With the Florida State League club, Plawecki hit .294 with a .391 on-base percentage in 60 games. He had eight homers and 80 RBIs between the two levels.

He caught 29 percent of would-be base stealers in 2013 (28-for-68).

"I know he hit last year," Collins said. "I know at the end of the year they put him at first base just to get him at-bats and to get him out from behind the plate because he was starting to get worn down a little. I'm going to get him in some games and see how he looks."

Collins sees Plawecki sticking behind the plate long term, too -- not shifted to first base or elsewhere.

"I think he's going to be a catcher, and I think he's going to be a good offensive catcher," Collins said. "If you can produce your own catchers, those are big.

"For years, when I was with the Dodgers in the minor leagues, we couldn't find catching. So we'd switch guys. We switched Russell Martin. We switched Carlos Santana. We were looking for guys who maybe didn't fit the stereotypical position they were playing at third. We knew they could swing the bat. We saw they had great feet, good arms, good hands. They both have become pretty good catchers."

David Wright chats with Curtis Granderson and Ike Davis during Sunday's batting practice.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- David Wright likes the energy early in Mets camp, but the captain says it's premature to get a true sense of the vibe.

"It's probably too soon," Wright said. "It's tough to get an overall vibe until you start narrowing things down a little bit. Spring training is so different than the regular season clubhouse-wise because there's always people floating around everywhere -- players, staff, media. It's not as condensed as it is in New York. So it's tough to really get a feel for things until we start narrowing it down and start seeing who is going to win jobs and stuff like that."

Still, with a week of workouts now in the books -- at least for pitchers and catchers -- here are five early takeaways from a mellow camp:

1. Terry Collins is going to go lightly on his veterans early. Wright, Curtis Granderson and Daniel Murphy are unlikely to play the first week of the Grapefruit League season because Collins wants to ease them into games and not risk early injury. On the bullpen side, Jose Valverde and Kyle Farnsworth will be eased in, too.

2. Harvey really isn't that big a story. Matt Harvey did get attention Saturday, when he tossed a baseball for the first time since Tommy John surgery. But there really is not reason to focus on him until he gets on a mound. And that should be after the team and media break camp. The Mets have consistently -- but probably needlessly -- made a point to note that Harvey is not a story this year, since they prefer to focus on what they have and not on what they're missing.

3. Collins really, really wants EY Jr. as his leadoff hitter. Whether the front office agrees remains to be seen, but Collins has repeatedly made his preference known that Eric Young Jr. leads off this season. Of course, Collins named Collin Cowgill a starter last spring training, and that lasted all of two regular-season games. The bet is that Juan Lagares finds a way to get plenty of at-bats this season when all is said and done. Even though Chris Young is going to be an everyday player to start, it seems likely over time he will struggle against righty pitching, giving ample opportunity for Collins to use at least four outfielders with some regularity.

4. Don't rule out a spring-training trade. Ike Davis has not made it to Opening Day just yet. The Pittsburgh Pirates or Baltimore Orioles, or a team that suffers a spring-training injury, could engage the Mets. For that matter, Ruben Tejada has not made it to March 31 as the starter, either. The Seattle Mariners have an extra shortstop and are likely to make a trade before Opening Day with someone.

5. There are only a handful of competitions. The biggest roster competitions in camp, provided there are no trades that change the complexion, probably are fifth starter and the final bullpen spot. Daisuke Matsuzaka probably has the leg up over John Lannan and Jenrry Mejia for the final rotation spot, but that officially is a competition. Also unresolved: Who rounds out a seven-man bullpen that should begin with Bobby Parnell, Vic Black, Valverde, Farnsworth, Scott Rice and possibly Carlos Torres? There are plenty of candidates for those one or two spots. The 40-man roster players would probably have the leg up, including Mejia (assuming he's not the fifth starter), Josh Edgin (who would provide a second lefty), Jeurys Familia, Gonzalez Germen, Ryan Reid, Jeff Walters and even newly converted Erik Goeddel. The other question: Do Lagares and Lucas Duda end up on the roster even if non-starters? The ESPNNewYork.com bet is yes, especially since the Mets play in Anaheim the second week of the season and will use the designated hitter there.

I learned about a game David Wright, Curtis Granderson, Ike Davis, Travis d’Arnaud, Chris Young and Lucas Duda were playing during batting practice yesterday.
“It’s a good way to help us work on different situations during the game,” Granderson explained to me.
He says the group and hitting coach agree on a situation, such as, ‘Runner on second, two out,” or, “Runner on first, no outs,” after which they start to hit with an objective. Base hits are one point, outs are negative one point. There are two goals, to score the most points, with bonus points for how many hits you can get in a row…

The guys really get in to it. It seems like they play for who pays for dinner, or something to that effect, but in either case they’re fairly passionate about it, with some slamming helmets and all while goofing on one another the entire time…

Granderson has brought some fun and some life to the clubhouse, I love this.
