As best as I can remember we only ran a gadget play three times as a coach. Two of them in one game. But it wasn't
so much a gadget play but we knew they would send a lb following a man in motion. (From two previous games against
other teams) We put our tailback in motion (which we never did) and just ran a sprint out to the right side. (We wanted to see
how they would defend that.) They did what we thought...they just shift lb's over two gaps, rather than chasing with their
MLB. The next time we ran it, we gave the ball on an inside handoff to our front side wing back running a counter. (It resembled the old Syracuse scissors play. But by moving those lb's our center was uncovered an could seal the back side
lb and the ballcarrier went around 50 yds smack down the middle of the field.

When I played I can only remember running one trick play and that lost us a couple of yards. But we never practiced
against a team running a trick play. During our Thursday walk-thru, when the defense was going thru preparations
for what the other team would run, the coaches would always have the offense come out in some wild formation.
We were taught to identify how they were lining up and all 11 players were taught to call time-out immediately.
(Then we could discuss it in case they did it again.)
Smartest thing to do as a defense is call a time out, just hate wasting it. Honestly, half the time you are probably better off letting it play out. Probably only practiced it a few times.

Yep High School!

Defense is the only way to go!

Get online and watch heads up training, tackling drills are so important at that age.
Another is rugby for tackling, teach them how to protect their melons when tackling and you will be coach of the year!

Tackling circuits is something I have been pushing for m pretty much since I have been on this staff. The HC finally said, lets do it. Will begin implementing it during spring ball.

I used to be a beast in NCAA and Madden. Cracked top 50 in the nation one year I was playing in college online. I could master the X's and O's and usually used a LB as a spy, sometimes a safety.

Hadn't played Madden in years and it is awful apparently, all glitchy.

So the answer to your question...no.

today's game is so different and the whole concussion thing is real and you need to make sure these kids get it.

Not to mention they need to know it to become better football players. The high school we feed into has produced I can’t even tell you how many college/NFL guys.

If you want to really jump start them, go to the high school and bug the shit out of them for their plays, drills.
The best programs in high school football make sure the pee wee's and middle school is running a form of what they do at the high school level. Kids come in with the basic knowledge and fall camp goes a lot easier and your focusing on the first two games cause your not teaching technique over and over again.

Think we run a similar style, we have to keep our terminology though because I have made it as simple as possible. With that said, the high school team has had a revolving door of coaches and limited success as of late. Hard to really ask them for guidance when I played for a school that beat them because we had proper technique and discipline. The athletes are just freaks.

I did. For 18 years, I think. Kids from 10 years old to high school varsity. Football and baseball. In Texas, Iowa and Nebraska. I love it, but it got hard dealing with parents and kids attitudes.

Had a couple great players. Coached many kids who have gone on to make something of themselves. Three were killed in gang violence. A couple of general stinkers and, I think, two murderers.
One kid I'm still in touch with became a grandpa a couple of years ago....

No but now that I think about it.

Sounds like a good idea.
Definitely not easy. Going on year 4, and it is significantly more difficult than I originally imagined.

I was a volunteer assistant for a few years helping out a friend of mine at a relatively poor school. Coached mainly WR, but did take over the OL for part of a season when the OL coach got sick.

Tried my hand at being an OC when my youngest was playing his last two years of rec ball. Was in waaaaay over my head even at the rec ball level.

Coached baseball and softball a few years at the high school and rec ball levels.
