Smartest thing to do as a defense is call a time out, just hate wasting it. Honestly, half the time you are probably better off letting it play out. Probably only practiced it a few times. As best as I can remember we only ran a gadget play three times as a coach. Two of them in one game. But it wasn't
so much a gadget play but we knew they would send a lb following a man in motion. (From two previous games against
other teams) We put our tailback in motion (which we never did) and just ran a sprint out to the right side. (We wanted to see
how they would defend that.) They did what we thought...they just shift lb's over two gaps, rather than chasing with their
MLB. The next time we ran it, we gave the ball on an inside handoff to our front side wing back running a counter. (It resembled the old Syracuse scissors play. But by moving those lb's our center was uncovered an could seal the back side
lb and the ballcarrier went around 50 yds smack down the middle of the field.
When I played I can only remember running one trick play and that lost us a couple of yards. But we never practiced
against a team running a trick play. During our Thursday walk-thru, when the defense was going thru preparations
for what the other team would run, the coaches would always have the offense come out in some wild formation.
We were taught to identify how they were lining up and all 11 players were taught to call time-out immediately.
(Then we could discuss it in case they did it again.)
