Do you think the posts look a little weaker than a typical NHL net? Curious as to your opinion. I've watched the replay a few times and I keep coming away thinking that there's no way the net should've come off from that.

he does it a lot. He hammers over and uses the post as a brake.
If he senses the play is a bit scrambly, he may put a little more oomph into the push.
Doesn't always dislodge the net.... but sometimes it does (purely by 'accident' of course)

43 is right, it was one of Roy's go-to moves as well.
Mike Smith does it regularly too

/but yes, getting back to you r question, the pegs don't seem to be as solid as NHL nets
still doesn't change the fact (err... my opinion) that he knew what he was doing.

Yes, the pegs do look extra squishy. There should be some kind of rebound in them to make them settle back on minor impacts. These don't seem to have that.

So, that in itself is an adjustment. Quick has to hit the posts softer so he doesn't dislodge enough for the refs to see until he wants them too. :suds:

They are. Apparently they are some kind of part plastic-composite and lighter/easier to dislodge than the metal poles of the NHL. My guess would be this is for safety purposes. But you are right, Pix. They ARE weaker/lighter than NHL nets.

Watching some replays...

Every time I watch Olympic hockey I think 'it's a shame the NHL doesn't play on a rink this size because there would be less chippy bs and you see some passing patterns and plays in Olympic hockey that are much more creative and interesting than you see in NHL hockey.'

Olympic size ice would put guys a lot of guys out of work. Boll, Parros, Wilson, Prust, and the like. Too much risk to keep those idiots on the squad. And you would see some guys excel even higher. I was ridiculously impressed at how well Pietrangelo skates. You see how much better Bouwmeester can be too. Datsyuk is just ridiculous. A good guy like Kris Russel could reach star level.

And a guy like Johansen or Spezza that can stickhandle in a phone booth... give 'em 13 extra feet to make a play? fuggeddaboutit.

That's what I want to see. Really good open-ice hitters would be more valuable, too, since the ones who try to do it and are bad at it will suck worse.

Not a lot of talk about this Russia-Slovakia game. Bilevdanov (is that even close?) is confusing me. Alex Radulov was the goat of yesterdays game after taking 2 boneheaded penalties leading to two US goals...so naturally he should get more ice time, and time on the PP over Geno Malkin. Maybe I'm a homer, but Geno is, you know, really good.

There's a point system in place for wins, OT wins, etc. I believe it's 3 for a win, 2 for OT win, 1 for OT loss, 0 regulation loss. After that it's goal differential.

Varlamov has as much pressure on him right now as any athlete I can think of in along time.

Russia needs the shootout to win it. I really hate Radulov. Just looks like slime.

And the two who got the goals for team Russia in the shootout make you hate them even more.

So here's the way I see things playing out seeding and standings wise:

If it's an OT or SO win, the loser gets the 4th seed (the wild card) and a bye to the quarters, while Russia would have to play in the first elimination round.

Even if it's a regulation loss, the loser could still easily get 4th on goal differential, since Finland (+9) and Canada (+8) are both currently better than the Swiss (+1) and the Russians (+3), the two teams the loser would be tied with points-wise.

So the full format is that after the group phase, all 12 teams are ranked. Winner of FIN/CAN likely gets either 1 or 3 (1 if a regulation win, 3 if an OT since they may lose goal differential to US), Sweden gets 1 or 2 (no worse since they're already on 9 points but would lose goal differential to FIN/CAN if a reg. win), US gets 2 or 3 (no worse) and loser of CAN/FIN gets 4. Those teams go through to quarters.

Russia gets 5, Switzerland 6, Czech 7, Slovenia 8, Austria 9, Slovakia 10, Latvia 11, Norway 12.

So we'd have Russia vs. Norway, Switzerland vs. Latvia, Czech vs. Slovakia, and Slovenia vs. Austria. Winners of those games are NOT re-seeded (I think) for the quarters.

Whoever gets the 1 seed has a cakewalk to semis
