2 problems there, aside from the Kirk part.

1) Dirk is not a great roll guy
2) Melo would not pass it to him anyway. He is an isolation player, not the guy you want running pick and roll with the ball in his hands.

Dirk not a great pick and roll guy??? Mavs ran many a pick and roll with Dirk with success.

Melo isn't as selfish as you are making out.

That is the problem though guys. If you lose LeBron, but keep Wade and Bosh you are a 5 seed. Might as well get some good players in return and be a 2 seed unless the Heat plan to rebuild entirely. I am not sure that it makes sense to sign Wade and Bosh if they can't get LeBron.

Seems like with Lebron off the books, they could sign some other FA's. Might even give them a deeper team. Or, they could save the cap space and then go after someone in next season's FA class.

but Dirk is a great passer and the reverse pick and roll with him passing to Melo would work just fine

You may be right about 'Melo. I don't think he's really ever been paired with another player that's at his level. Wherever he goes, if he's paired with another top player or 2, it will be interesting to see how he does.

You think Bosh/Wade/ Riley with 20-25M is only a 5 seed in the East?
We were a 5 seed with just ( a much healthier) Wade when the East was a lot tougher pre James.
Bosh is a decent #1 option on the right roster.

To be clear, I don't think James is going anywhere.
The list of options isn't that large, and it isn't changing.
He owes the Heat nothing, but he would be doing a disservice to his 'new team' by not announcing it ASAP if there were one.

It all really depends. Miami can be a top 4 seed. But without Lebron, they're not better than Indiana or Chicago. If Lebron leaves, if we can't get a top tier player like Griffin, then I don't want other players back. If I'm the Heat I'd take draft picks. Do what the Lakers did, sign most of your roster to one-year deals and see what the market looks like next year.

Also, Lebron has done alot for the Heat. But it was a mutual relationship. Without Wade and Bosh, Lebron would still be ringless. Sure, those two came up short in these finals. I don't remember hearing of the Heat wanting to trade Lebron after 2011 when he came up short and Wade and Bosh showed up.

Don't believe everything you read. I'm pretty sure LBJ wouldn't make any decision until he met with the team face to face

I'm not believing it yet but that's the only team I see him going to IMO other than Miami. Miami the front runner

He needs his fair chance like Lebron to prove himself with a legit star and as you said it would be interesting to see.

Until the rosters are set, obviously, who knows...

But if Wade/ Bosh are 30-35M, Riley has closer to 30 to play with.
I think the Pacers lose Lance.
Bulls would depend on Anthony, but I think he stays in NY.

The Heat could stay under the cap, lose the repeater status, and maybe still contend.

I agree with this assessment. Even if they got Blake Griffin, they are probably 3rd best in the East. It always depends on how they spend that last 20 million, but like you guys have already said, you can't replace LeBron.

Melo played with prime AI and when the 6ers traded him to Denver, most on the CBS boards (not me) were calling Denver a contender. Clearly, AI and Dirk are much different and Melo was younger then, but that combination did not work so well.

OK, I went back and looked at some numbers. Melo is better than I thought with pick and roll, but the Knicks just did not run it much at all with him.

As for Dirk, he is loves to pop or flare and I am not sure that Melo will find him regularly enough. You might be better off with Monta handling the ball and Melo spotting strong side, and yes, Melo is the definition of selfish. People can change, but I have seen very little evidence that Melo is interested in being a team first guy.

All of my scenarios were only, ever, addressing the East.

But, whoever wins the East, is playing for a championship, which makes them contending.

Not talking you specific, but it's hilarious how many fans of different teams that have done nothing but hate on James are now photoshopping him in their teams jersey. :noidea:
