DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings signed goaltender Evgeni Nabokov to a one-year deal, the team announced Thursday.

A source told ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun that the deal is worth $570,000.

The 35-year-old goalie, who had spent his entire NHL career with the San Jose Sharks, must now clear waivers to join the Red Wings because he started the season playing in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League.

The Sharks didn't offer Nabokov a contract to play this season. He made $6 million last season -- when he went 44-26 with a 2.43 goals-against average -- in the final year of his five-year contract.

Nabokov signed a four-year deal with SKA St. Petersburg, but the two mutually parted ways in mid-December, with Nabokov citing family reasons.

Chris Osgood, who backs up Jimmy Howard, had hernia surgery last week and is expected to be out until March. Howard has been slowed by a bruised right knee.

Awesome pickup for Detroit. Sharks fans crying across the nation.

I don't think he will. Philly, Chicago, Colorado, Florida... there are too many teams that could use a good goalie, or even an extra goalie. Hell with Niemi out I could see the Sharks taking a run at him.

There are all kinds of conspiracy theories out there, suggesting Holland has some crazy plan or a trade agreement with some other teams in place... on the radio they were saying that if a player is picked up on waivers, he can't be traded this season. I don't know if it's true, but I have a feeling a team that needs goalie help is going to snag him.

/Turco coming back to his old college home and reuniting with Modano after Chicago waives him after picking up Nabby? Complicated, but possible..

i think what has to happen is if the team that claims him on waivers later on wants to trade him ... they have to put him on waivers again before the trade can be made

I don't think there's any chance that he gets to Detroit.

But it would not surprise me one bit if he ends up in San Jose again. That's my bet.

...without the Wings having the chance to take him back first. Did not word it correctly the first time. Sorry for confusion.
10 minutes ago via Twitter for iPad .Just to clarify, Nabokov cannot be traded because he would have to go back to the wings on waivers. My point is he can't go to 3rd party...

so, for example, New Jersey could pick him up on waivers, and then somehow the wings could get another shot at him?
coincidentally and concurrently, the Devils could trade a bloated salary to the Wings to bury in their minor system.
everybody goes home happy?

So I could go watch Brian Rolston play 10 minutes from my house, AND the Wings could get Nabokov?

"He's not our player, so when he becomes our player then I'll talk about him," coach Mike Babcock told the media after Thursday's 4-3 win in St. Louis. "In the meantime, as an organization, even though we've signed him, until he clears waivers and becomes a Red Wing there's no sense talking about him."

This.

You can't trade a player in the same season he was claimed off waivers. Detroit has to hope he goes unclaimed. The only other possibility is that they have a deal with New Jersey to claim him. Once NJ is awarded the claim all teams who put in a claim and the team who origionally signed him and submitted him to waivers are given a list of "Claim Order" incase NJ wiaves him. Detroit would be last on the claim order list. Detroit could then bribe the other teams by trading picks or prospects for "future consideration" in order to get them to drop thier claim on him. Once that is done NJ could waive him and Detroit would have the 1st option to claim him since all other teams who submitted a claim on the origional waiver dropped their right to claim him.

Uh...funny thing. Ek's tweet says he hears from 3 sources that the Sharks are picking him up on waivers. That'd be funny. Of course it's Ek, but I'd laugh.

i thought I read on a sportsnet ticker that a team has already claimed him or contacted Holland to tell them they would be claiming him. this is interesting.

Blob's most recent tweet came with a story that attempted to explain it...but basically he said there's no real way for DET to orchestrate a deal to avoid the process. It's gonna happen. Haven't seen any news of him being claimed yet.
