I don't know much about Narvaez' defense but at first glance it seems like a pretty good trade.

From what I've read, he's not very good defensively.

Mariners Acquire C Omar Narváez, trade Álex Colomé to White Sox

This is a pretty good write up.

Overall it seems like the Mariners got a catcher who looks like a young, cheap, league average catcher when you consider his offense and defense. They also unloaded salary and a useless player to the Mariners in the process. Good trade overall.

I like the deal as well... Colome was a set up guy for us so for us to get a very good young catcher in the deal is a bonus...

Definitely, his defense is somewhat suspect, but I think he compensates with his bat.

I'm also probably biased because I think it's a breath of fresh air seeing a catcher who gets on base.

The opposing argument is he will be in his early 30s when you "hope" to be contending again

He would lose defensive value, and wouldn't be as strong of a runner, but I don't see any reason to assume that his bat will do anything other than improve.

Mid 20's now? If true, this deal is better than it was when McNeil was part of the package.

I'd rather pay more money and have McNeil instead of Bautista.

My hypothesis is that the Mariners had $60m cash on the table for McNeil, Dunn, Kelenic, Bruce and Swarzak. Then the ownership probably said they didn't want to send that much cash.

Money offer probably decreased and as a result the Mets switched Bautista with McNeil.

Hearing Segura to Philly has been rumored. They have a few nice prospects for sure.

catching is more of a mental part of the game
so if you can get ahead (mentaly)of the game...it can slow down for a catcher
if they have the physical tools
they should at some point be good
pitch framing is another thing that
can be worked on
and improved, its not all that physical either ...more mental

he has a good arm they say
so i would have to say it is mental
and he has not reached his ceiling
defencively
but they still have freitas
and need to add one more

one more at AA would be good as well

baseball is 90%mental
and the other half is physical

Maybe McNeil is worth $36M, but I see him having below average defense as a slightly unproven 27 year old (225 ab's), which would make him 30 by the time the M's may or may not be contending.

By only paying $24M ($12M per first two years of Cano's contract) instead of $60M (all five years at $12M per) it opens up $12M per season starting in 2021 through 2023 by the time the M's realistically might be contending.

So if they think highly enough about him that he'll be a $12M per year player by 2021 or the time they start contending, then he'd be worth the $36M difference, I'm thinking.

Colome for Narvaez seems like a very nice grab for the M's.

To get Colome, the M's traded Moore and Romero. And got Span, since released.

I really like this trade.

Not sure how I feel about this. J.P. Crawford has always been highly rated as a prospect, but his brief major league performance and his numbers in the minors are quite underwhelming.

My preference would be that Sixto Sanchez be included in any package the Mariners receive from the Phillies.

I wish the Cano/Diaz trade would just finally be announced so that we know the final details.

I'd start a thread for it since it appears we know the players involved, but that is pending physicals and how much money the Mariners send.

I will say that I'm really excited about Jarred Kelenic. I think he has superstar written all over him. I'm probably jumping the gun, but he's a guy I could see being a top-10 prospect if he continues trending up. I'd immediately consider him the top prospect in our farm system.

Same here but I don’t think it will get done this weekend.

1) they’ve yet to announce Cano waived his no trade clause.

2) since there is cash involved, that needs to be approved by the commissioner

The deal is pretty much a done deal, wish it’s just complete it already. I hated this initially when the Mets switched out McNeil, but still reporting 60mil cash in return. Now it’s just 24.

Either way, Kelenic appears to be the key piece in this trade for the M’s

It’s official! Cano is back in New York.
They’ll probably announce it Monday

Agreed Sixto has to be involved cause JP is starting to remind me of Dom Brown. Supposed to be the crown jewel but never panned out.

Man , losing Diaz though, @#$%^@$ He only saved 57 games outta 61 tries, no big deal ... 1.96 ERA, 0.79 Whip, 124 strikeouts to 17 walks... I hate the way the M's always try to rebuild by getting ride of good young talent... M's just spin there wheels all the dam time...

But it's not like he's a star center fielder or ace. He's a closer and you gotta sell high on those guys when you're not competing. There's absolutely no reason to hang onto an elite closer when you have to build the rest of your lineup for 3 years in the future.

Diaz was absolutely filthy last year and I'll miss watching him dominate for us and those passionate reactions, but it is what it is. His value needed to be used to acquire talent in other areas.

Stings though, he's so young and coulda been here closing for a long time... Who are we getting in return exactly, I still don't know, Jay Bruce is the only one I know of...
