Here are a few positives that stand out to me:
  • He's under club control through 2022
  • He's a LH Hitter
  • He was 4th in the AL in throwing out base runners at 24.1%
  • 90 BB's and 124K's in 734 AB's...
  • June 1st, 2018 through July 31st he led the majors hitting .379 so that tells you his potential...
He seems like a definite upgrade at the position... We really need someone in this position who can put the ball in play and get on base…

I see him as a key piece of any contending team we hope establish.

The opposing argument is he will be in his early 30s when you "hope" to be contending again

I like the deal.

We had no use for Colome and he was going to get around $7m in arbitration. This gives us a solid, young catcher.

Zunino 84 WRC+ last year, Navarez 122 WRC+

Perfect bridge to Cal Raleigh if he happens to pan out. Looked good in Everett last year tho

i understand that line of thinking, but holding onto something you think you'll need to contend in 3-5 years is something i'd only trust to work in the hands of a really good GM. dozens of variables have to work out precisely in your long-term plan for haniger to fit in to a contender in 2021 or whatever. if you can get good value for him (not in this trade), then i'd say just do it. his perceived value from other GM's who might be willing to give up too much goes down with each month of team control lost.

just my perspective.

i just don't trust dipoto no matter what he does, though, so i guess none of it really matters.

also, i didn't follow the m's a lot last year, and didn't realize how good haniger's year was. good for him.

He had some streaky times but overall the numbers were good. He's the type of guy Dipoto said he would want when he first got here.

Projecting our lineup, should this trade go through (without McNeill):
Smith CF
Segura SS
Haniger RF
Bruce DH
Healy 1B
Seager 3B
Gamel LF
Narvaez C
Gordon 2B

Looks like about 60 wins.

Yeah, Segura will be gone shortly after Manny Machado signs. Segura will be the consolation trophy for the Machado sweepstakes runner up.

I wish they would dump Healy too but he is pre-arb so we are prolly stuck with him for another year.

Yea I agree on the Healy front, I'd much rather give Vogey a full year to see what he can do.

I’d rather see the Mariners send $80 million and get McNeil (only because the Mets want him) it’s not like the Mariners need that money for anything. The Mariners will still see a huge profit even if their payroll has 1/6 of it for a player not on the team.

Schoop for second base. But we will undoubtedly get outbid. Probably by the Red Sox
