Tell me if somebody who did the following could ever reinvent themselves to something resembling a competent GM:

1. traded 2 prospects to ATL for Mallex Smith

2. then traded Mallex Smith and 2 prospects for Drew Smyly who never played game for Ms

3. then traded Zunino and Heredia for Mallex Smith.

Yes, that's right. We have GM who, over the course of 2 years, traded a bunch of prospects, Zunino, Hereida, and Mallex Smith for......Mallex Smith.

Well I'm just so f'n happy (and tickled T-Mobile pink) that we got Mallex Smith back in the lineup. NOT!! Position players show up and the first friggin day, Mallex Smith can't play because he has a "SORE SHOULDER". What a crock of crapola!! Go Mariners....yeah right. We are stuck with Dip stick and Servais for how long???????

Well Jerry brought in a guy who has never actually coached before for the pitchers so maybe he can reinvent himself? No clue, what is honestly best for everyone is the Mariners play well enough to the deadline, then they can deal Leblanc and Leake, Felix can announce his retirement and the final two months can be a farewell tour. But realistically I think if he wants to continue playing he will have a job somewhere.

I read an article on him and he sounds like a smart guy and I'm curious to see how an analytics based approach will work, but this guy doesn't exactly have the kind of coaching experience you'd want. I can't imagine he knows a whole lot about mechanical adjustments necessary for major league talent. Fingers certainly crossed though.

I like Mallex Smith, and I can understand why they're taking a careful approach with him. I was sad we immediately traded him away in the first place.

The Athletic (Paywall) did a top-200 MLB prospect list:

Here are the Mariners included:

151. Justin Dunn, RHP
92. Julio Rodriguez, OF
90. Evan White, 1B
52. Jarred Kelenic, OF
44. Justus Sheffield, LHP
24. Yusei Kikuchi, LHP

Few thoughts:

- Some of the prospect rankings exclude Kikuchi due to their criteria. Nice to see that Bowden holds such a high evaluation of him.
- Justin Dunn is ranked a bit lower than he is with most other rankings I've seen.
- Similarly I was surprised to see Julio Rodriguez ranked in his top 100. I don't think I've seen him in a top 100 list yet.
- White, Kelenic and Sheffield are all roughly where other websites have them.
- The fact that these are the only guys ranked is somewhat concerning and really speaks to the lack of depth in the system. I was actually quite surprised that Kyle Lewis, Logan Gilbert, Shed Long, and Sam Carlson didn't receive consideration in that 100-200 range. Lewis and Carlson in particular. Both have had injury issues, but have high end potential if they're able to overcome them.

Bowden: Ranking baseball's Top 200 prospects, Part 4 (50-1)

I obviously can’t speak for the hire, was just mostly an add on to what GM would still have a job is X, Y and Z happened then hired a bunch of staff who’s main job has been pushing paper. In the spectrum of sports, sports is goal oriented and as of now there are a bunch of people on staff that can show you how to prepare for an at bat or facing a batter but no one that has experience with teaching the process in the spectrum of process to goals.

On my phone so...
Yeah..the mariners
Got some good prospects in the off season trades.
Well done...so far..jedi

But there will be more to come by trade deadline
Some other teams prospects I like
If the mariners where to trade with that team..and in a mariners possible need

Cardinals..with z man to tampa..they still
Need a catcher of future

Carson kelly..catcher..fits well with narvaez..going forward

Cinncinati...with seager future..unknown
And gordons..as well

Nich senzel...3b/2b..cinnci

Logan allen...LHP..padres not likely to give
Up mckinze Gore.LHP
So the mariners will take Allen in a trade

Touki Toussaint..RHP...a strike out guy
And #5 in Atlanta's rotation right now
But
Mike soroka is the higher rated prospect

Who do the mariners have that Atlanta would want..??
Seager...or Bruce I would think
Or both
Maybe..bull pen guys..who knows on that

Atlanta has no desire for any of the above . They might have done a deal for Diaz and Haniger for some of their prospects . Segar and bruce would have no place in there .

And with the dh..possible for the future in
The national league

Maybe they would like vogelbach..1b/ dh
Cuz they certainly do need a backup
1b
Even if they do not like Bruce after seeing
Him for years with the mets..yeah that is ok.cuz the mariners like him

.and vogelbach is from florida....lol

Hey, I heard Seager finally decided to drop a few pounds for 2019- maybe that will help cuz nothing else has. With a healed foot now he can use his whole body at the dish :pound:

Little Leaguer 1st baseman Dan V...….LOL

Bruce could if he he plays like pre 2018 and duval continues his slide.

Biggest issue is I see is it will be difficult to get him to get the at bats necessary to prove he has any value unless there is some injury or someone gets moved.

Edwin Encarncion will be the DH until he gets traded and the corner outfield spots are going to be manned by Domingo Santana and Mitch Haniger. I can't see that he can reasonably get much playing time without an injury or Encarncion getting traded.

Perhaps at 1B? He has minimal playing time there, but even Ryon Healy likely provides more value (and youth) at that position at this point.

This is a very fair point.

They really need to move EE

Yeah that's how I feel as well.

Unfortunately there just doesn't seem to be the demand for him right now. He really does create a log jam for the Mariners. The front office either needs to be very patient or sell quite low. In a best case scenario, EE gets moved relatively soon and for a decent return and Jay Bruce somehow recaptures some of the magic of his younger years so we can get a penny or two in return for him as well.

This franchise is a shit show, be happy you're a fan of a functional franchise.
