My only hope position wise is they get another SS in there. I'd also assume EE is definately gone and Leake is probably gone at this point but who knows. Maybe Leake is more of a July thing with the way the market is going.

Bullpen looks like its thin but I'm for giving younger guys a chance there and letting them take their lumps. No reason to throw money at the bullpen right now
Mariners' Tim Beckham: Lands one-year pact with Seattle

Not flashy but this was the kind of signing that was needed. If Crawford ends up being able to win the job and push Beckham to a utility role even better.

Solid signing and he comes cheap.

Being a former #1 overall pick gives him a bit of upside if you want to look at it optimistically. Played pretty well in 2017 and was a bit above replacement level in 2018.

Would be nice if he plays well enough that Trader Jerry can flip him at the deadline. After this offseason, I honestly now look at every player acquisition as "what can we get for him at the deadline?"

So the Mets have signed Jed Lowrie. This signing effectively leaves McNeil with no position to play. So I'm still not sure why the Mets were adamant about not including McNeill in the package for Cano. Maybe they are saving him for deadline trade bait.

Meanwhile, the Mets have put together what might be the strongest starting lineup in the NL East.

this would help everyone

EE to white sox ...palka to TB..maybe plus

zavala or collins with #35 overall
to mariners

If the white Sox don’t get Machado they may be willing to send you Alonso to get EE.

That would help you out

He is 27. Could be a utility guy who will still get 300-400 abs in the national league, or be traded for pitching

I think this move is only for depth there is no way he can bring his power to this park coming from Camden Yards. He may just be coming in and out of the minors in case we need him

And the last line is the main issue I have with this entire offseason. The roster he has assembled doesn’t remotely put them in the category of getting a top 5 pick. To me it is going to keep them within striking distance of the 2nd wildcard. If you realistically look at the roster they have upgraded LF, CF C offensively, upgraded the lead off hitter. A slight downgrade on average for SS and most likely slightly less than a push at DH.

Jeff McNeil - 2B - Mets
Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that the Mets plan on playing Jeff McNeil more in the outfield after signing Jed Lowrie.

The Mets were reportedly extremely hesitant to include Jeff McNeil in the trade for Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz, but after signing Lowrie and the trade for JD Davis, it became unclear how much McNeil would play in 2019. There are still questions as to how much run he'll get, but if he can handle the corner outfield, it'll be much easier to get his bat into the lineup. This could also help McNeil's fantasy value if he's able to quality for multiple positions, of course.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that Russell Wilson will attend spring training with the Yankees.

Wilson was acquired by the Yankees from the Rangers last winter for future considerations, and he attended spring training with the Yankees without making an appearance in the Grapefruit League. You can expect Wilson to do the same in 2019, his baseball days are over.

Based on your post I assume you'd agree with me that it's in the best interest of the team to play as poorly as possible in 2019 (and maybe 2020) so that we accumulate draft picks.

I think you're right in your assessment.

Not sure if they're within striking distance of the 2nd wildcard. In 2018 the Mariners played like a 78-82 win team, but were fortunate to win a lot of close games. I think the team is definitely worse than that going into 2019, but certainly not bad enough to lose enough games to land a top-5 pick.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more interest in Mike Leake. He is 31 years old, incredibly consistent and his contract is pretty close to what I'd assume he would get on the open market. The Mariners owe him $26m through 2021 (assuming you take the buyout). Lance Lynn got $30m over 3 years and is a pretty similar player statically at the same age. I can't see why a team in need of a pitcher wouldn't offer to take on Leake's contract + a mid level prospect.

Leake's value will surely increase at the AS break. Could be Dip is waiting for the more interest as teams jockey for the 2nd half run???

Without question I’m in the camp of its in their best interest to suck. I’d rather them be terrible and get a top pick over missing the playoffs by 5 games and get a mid round pick. Striking distance of the 2nd WC means (to me) they are within 5 games of that position by the trade deadline which with this offense and starting staff doesn’t seem far fetched to me. The bullpen will probably suck and offset it though.

I don’t think there really is a market for a guy like Leake in the offseason enough to trade him. He is a type of pitcher that a contender trades for when they whiff on the top pitchers at the deadline. I’m sure there is a trade available but if the team is trying to contend then, to me, it’s better to hold onto him until there is a team desperate for a pitcher. No one is desperate enough to trade for a back end of the rotation pitcher right now....

But like I’ve said this rebuild has been so confusing/backwards that it wouldn’t surprise me if Jerry traded Leake and ended up bolstering the bullpen.
