I think the market now is how it is going to be from now on. Last years big fish was JD Martinez and he was forced into taking a massively team friendly deal and deals that I think will be the trend where they are shorter term deals with club and player options much like basketball does.

I agree, at least until the current MLB collective bargaining agreement expires. Theres just way too many bad contracts floating around right now.

I think the next CBA is going to be an intense negotiation and possible lead to a work stoppage. I think players see the signs of where FA is heading but will try to make up for it by getting players paid earlier, not waiting 4 years or whatever arbitration is before they make decent money.

Sources: ChiSox make $175M pitch to Machado

This is interesting. He's only 26 right now. 7 years 175m sounds super low-ball to me. A lot of people speculated he'd get in excess of $300m.

If he is being offered 7 years then he should take it really. Long term deals seem like they aren’t going to happen anymore. Harper might get one that long, definitely Trout but can’t imagine a player like Machado (who has definite red flags) is going to a much better deal than 7 years....but I’d probably be a terrible agent so who knows. I think GM’s are more inclined now to do the offer the M’s offered ARod, a crap load of money but for 3-4 year deals with club options.

7 year deal would make him a free agent again at 33. Probably not a good age to be a free agent. I don't know if the market will change any better for the players next winter. It may take 3-4 years before this trend phases out. If I were him I'd take a shorter term deal similar to JD Martinez or Yoenis Cespedes and then hit the open market again at age 29 or 30.

If I were the agent that’d be ideal but his agent came out slamming the numbers that were reported so I’m guessing he is going for a Cano type deal.

In the age of Sabermetrics . I don't think most Gm's are going to give out Cano type deals .

agreed two and three year deals
are more likely
need to do a new deal when guys
get over 30=to=32 or so
then two or three years at most
after that

it seems a lot of the guys i was
looking at are falling in draft rankings
so i will switch up and take a guy
#1 that fits mlb top 50
a ss that i have scouted ( internet and utube...lololol)
will holland auburn..fits for mariners going forward
he has some power...
and could always be moved to 3b
but he is ranked
# 22 so..he is my new guy.. for now...lol

It’s gonna be interesting to see if more guys don’t get pre fa deals after seeing this go on 2 winters in a row

yea we will see if they truly dont get deals or if its just a last minute thing. Remember last year Darvish and Arrieta still got overpaid in the end when Spring Training started. I think Alex Cobb was another.

I think my bigger surprise with Machado is that the APY is lower than I anticipated. I would've guessed something around $30m per year around 7 or 8 years. Could be smart for him and his agent to shoot for 5 or 6 years with a higher APY that way Machado could hit free agency around his early 30s and try to shoot for another big deal.

If I were his agent I’d shoot for a 2 year deal with either a player or club option for a third year. Get your $30 million a year for two years then try again while he is still in his prime. Worst thing possible to me, is for an agent to try to pull a 5-6 year deal where his deal ends on the back end of his “prime” collect $100 plus million in a combined 5 year span then get a Cruz type deal on the back half because Cano and Pujols type deals are done with how MLB contracts are until the next CBA.

Even Arieta and Darvish got team friendly deals compared to what Felix and Hamels got a few years prior.
