A package including:

Jay Bruce+Mike Leake+Edwin Encarnacion

Believe the M’s can haul back a ton with this.

A lot of money would be switching hands in a trade like this. Jay Bruce is dead money and Edwin Encarnacion is overpaid. Only way the Mariners get anything for Bruce is if he hits well in 2019 and someone is looking for a DH/corner outfielder.

I'm surprised we haven't heard more whispers regarding Mike Leake. I'd expect that a lot of teams would have interest in him. He's owed $26m over the next two seasons once you subtract how much of the contract is being paid by the Cardinals and assuming you opt-out of the contract.

On the open market I'd assume that Leake would land something like a 3 year $35m contract, which is pretty comparable to what he's making now. I'd assume that a team would be willing to take on his entire contract and the Mariners would get a decent prospect in return. If the Mariners were willing to throw some extra cash they could increase their return.

Yeah I feel letting a guy go who can hit 100 RBIs and almost 40 homers is a waste to not get anything in return. I don't see why teams aren't fighting to get him on a 1 year deal playing DH especially if you are a playoff team

Result of a fluke 89 win season when they were competing despite knowing Cruz will not be eligible for a qualifying offer and they will get nothing for him in free agency either.

I don’t hate this trade, but something is confusing me and making me not like the Cano/Diaz deal. The Mariners keep handing out money like it’s nothing to get rid of the long term deal contract of Cano. How did it not make more sense just to keep paying Cano since he was very productive and sell high on Diaz or package him with Seager to get rid of that contract not Cano’s.

It’s just confusing trying to keep dealing away Cano’s contract by spreading money on trades while not receiving anything that will help in the future besides one OF prospect. This “rebuild” is just so confusing as they aren’t really setting themselves up for anything other than taking on more bad contracts in 2021.

i think they need to wait till cruz signs..prob with houston or minnesota...lol

then trade encarnacion to
the loser for prospects

mariners still need an mlb short stop and could use a r/r #4 of
or a cordero meyer in which
myer would 1b/3b/of/dh
almost a utility for the corner...lol
at mlb they need a LH relief

they could use another AAA
pitcher..LH/orRH starter
2..LHrelief

AA
3b

high A
1b /dh R/R unless comacho comes back
could use a ss but can get by
without it

the way i see it anyway

giants get in 2 round
drew fergeson..cf astros
this guy is better than people think
and could end up staying in mlb
unbelievable
mariners could trade giants for him....lol..and get there #4 OF

whatever a lot if us around the board( spotshoopla mariners)
think of dipoto

overall i think he has done a good
job
yeah he missed the playoffs.but
who knew oakland would do what they did...yeah he was that close
with a hernandez handycap

and now when they need to rebuild
he is doing it
and the window will be a small two year.to compete..not a major
overhaul.and will prob have a better overall organization after

so not only entertaining on the
field but in the trade office as well

so he had to go to the clinnic.lol
during the encarnacion trade

so get well depoto
as the baseball turns...lol

have to think the rays will sign
cruz and he will be cheaper
than encarnacion
that leaves maybe one or two
other teams that will be interested
in encarnacion...maybe
not a big market

so the mariners may have to keep
him...but they have voggy for the
future
i would flip him now if a good trade came available
cuz he has one year..right..??

i kept thinking that the sandiego
trade should be done...but.
just not with myer or bruce

what works out for both teams
is
gamel..for Renfro
and
leake for cordero...or janikowski

both outfields would be solved
for now
mariners would look like
Haniger...RF/Bruce
Smith.......CF
Renfro..R/R./Bruce..L/L..LF
cordero...all three...OF

bruce / voggy............DH
healy /voggy/bruce..1b
gordan.......2b

.......ss.. encar= trade

seager....3b
navaez.. catcher

san diego would look just as good in the outfield
and get a pircher they need
..

For those of you keeping track, here are the changes due to trades:

GONE:
-Mike Zunino, C
-Guillermo Heredia, OF
-Michael Plassmeyer, LHP
-James Paxton, LHP
-Alex Colome, RHP
-Robinson Cano, 2B
-Edwin Diaz, RHP
-Jean Segura, SS
-Juan Nicasio, RHP
-James Pazos, LHP
-Carlos Santana, 1B

Numbers in parentheses indicate the current ranking the player has in the Mariners farm system by mlb.com.

IN:
-Mallex Smith, CF
-Jake Fraley, CF (#27)
-Justus Sheffield, LHP (#1)
-Erik Swanson, RHP (#11)
-Dom Thompson-Williams, CF (#16)
-Ricardo Sanchez, LHP (#23)
-Omar Narvaez, C
-Jay Bruce, OF
-Anthony Swarzak, RHP
-Gerson Bautista, RHP (#28)
-Jarred Kelenic, CF (#2)
-Justin Dunn, RHP (#3)
-J.P. Crawford, SS
-Edwin Encarnacion, 1B
-#77 overall pick

Few things to note: Crawford would probably be ranked top 3 if he was still considered a prospect. Ricardo Sanchez was acquired for cash. Lastly, the #77 overall pick (using Josh Stowers who was selected #54 who was considered a reach) would probably equate to a prospect who would rank between 10 and 15 in the Mariners farm system.

Difficult to evaluate this all in the aggregate, but the Mariners have substantially improved their farm system along with their financial situation in the mid to long-term.

so far so good

even if they sign kikuchi it could look like

free agent
gonzales..L/L
kikuchi.......L/L
swanson
Leblanc.....L/L
that would work for now
also assuming they trade leake
also assuming they would need
to sign kikuchi

with an encarnacion trade that added a R/R shortstop
and maybe a lhp or two at AAA..??..lol
