If Paxton's issues are mental, pitching in NYC isn't going to be very easy on him. You could be right that it may take him a while to lose anything that makes him successful. I'm just pointing out that a dip in velocity for a pitcher who throws an average fastball of 95.4 mph on 63.8% of his throws, could be a concern. And given Paxton's age and injury history, a dip could be possible and that could have a serious impact on his effectiveness.

You are right that holding on to him for the deadline would bring us a better package, especially if he remained healthy. But as you mentioned, it's a serious gamble given Paxton's track record. Imagine how furious we would all be if come the trade deadline, Paxton has been battling injuries and we don't get shit for him.

As always there are a lot of variables at play - which is what makes these things so fun to discuss - and we will not really know if this was a good trade for a few years in all likelihood.

Without question I think him being put in a big market isn’t optimal for him. But on the other hand, the fans and media in this market are insert your feminine adjective so he might just have a switch turned on who knows.

I can see why you think that, but I just disagree that he will have a dip. He doesn’t have the normal wear on him most pitchers his age does. He has such an easy motion unlike other power pitchers like let’s just use Verlander as an example. And just with a minor tweak in his motion got him an average of 4 mph on his fastball. So I’m general I would agree with you but I would put money on it his velocity won’t dip until around age 36 or 37. But his getting minor injuries would scare me off way more than a possible dip.

Paxton just to me was worth the gamble. Some team would still give up essentially the same package with the ambition of getting him right. But my whole premise of my thought is if Jerry is legit on his going the new age of having starters go 4-5 innings I just think it’s dumb to trade him for essentially a long reliever. Should of held out until he got a position player. Just seems like the Astros said no so he took the next call and made a deal.

of recent teams that have tanked ........and now are ready to compete

phili.....nola, arrieta,pivetta,efflin......but they need LHp.............................and will buy it...and a better bull pen

cinncinati....de.sclafani,castillo,reed,mahle......they could use another LHp.....they want to buy as well
sims and stepenson will help...plus a few more

san diego...lucchesi,lauer,erlin,richard,nix.....they have a few more..........they also want to buy an ace

atlanta.....bought a few guys for a while but...now they have mostly..homegrown guys..or guys who were traded for
and started mlb at atlanta except for gauzman

my point here is that..no team tankes....and then has a ready to go team..when they are ready to compete again

mariners...gonzales,swanson,severino,leblanc....even if you put leake in there...prob would not be that bad by the end of the year
still they lack an ace as well....with only povse and maybe whalen (if he does not get rule 5ed) as possible..for replace/
standin
other than hernandez, and elias....prob out of the pen

so it is a two year rerotation...not rebuild....but phili,cinnci,sandiego..and atlanta....have suffered...a lot longer..as far as going through the whole rebuild

they are right where they were when depoto took over.....as far as being one spot away from the playoffs

but they have a better team than they did then.....yes .they do....as far as the lineup goes

back then they had a decent pitching staff...not a good bull pen..and the line up was so so

they are better off today going in the direction they are

and maybe... just maybe....they will have a decent rotation anyway..with a couple of lower priced free agents

some free agent slated for next year

garret cole..................houston

madison bumgarner....sf

cris sale.....................boston

Morosi: Phillies interested in Segura, Diaz
6265.jpg

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Phillies have expressed interest in Jean Segura and Edwin Diaz.

The Phillies are believed to be one of the top pursuers of Manny Machado and have also been linked to Craig Kimbrel. A deal for Segura or Diaz -- possibly both if things get crazy -- would cost far less in salary, but would also require Philadelphia to give up prospects. The Mariners appear to be open to dealing Segura, but reportedly believe Diaz is a part of the long-term solution. Any deal made with Segura would also require him to waive his no-trade clause. He's signed through 2022 with a club option for 2023.

still the same guys...would be of interest...to the mariners.....pivetta,irvin,......kingery for sure....maybe eickoff
some prospects would be interesting

but phili has the 18 ranked farm....so..like mariners there is not... tons and tons ...of pickins there

I'm just glad to see that they are talking to other teams (than the Padres) about Segura. We've had hundreds of trades with the Padres down through the years and not one single trade has had reasonably positive results.

a phili trade would really work..for segura...almost to well if you add seager
