Latest On Mariners’ GM Search
By Steve Adams [September 15, 2015 at 11:38pm CDT]
The Mariners are one of five big league teams looking for a general manager, though their search isn’t as far along as a team like the Red Sox or Angels, each of whom saw their previous GMs step down earlier than the Mariners fired Jack Zduriencik. To this point, much of the talk surrounding the Seattle GM vacancy has been preliminary and/or speculative in nature. Former Halos GM Jerry Dipoto is expected to interview, and the Mariners also have permission to interview Yankees assistant GM Billy Eppler. Former Marlins GM Dan Jennings and former Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd have been linked to Seattle, though Jennings has a standing offer to return to his post with the Fish once the season ends and he’s done with his rather strange and brief tenure as the club’s on-field manager. The Mariners are said to be seeking an experienced candidate, although there is of course the possibility that a would-be rookie GM could impress in an interview.

Here’s the latest on the search for a GM in Seattle…

  • Blue Jays special assistant Dana Brown will interview with the Mariners on Wednesday, tweets ESPN’s Buster Olney. A former scouting director for the Nationals, Brown drafted Ian Desmond, Ryan Zimmerman and several others while overseeing the Nats’ scouting operation. (Stephen Strasburg was selected under his watch as well, although he was seen as a slam-dunk No. 1 overall pick.) As MLB.com’s Gregor Chisholm wrote in a 2011 profile, Brown actually oversaw Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos when the two worked together in the Nats/Expos franchise, even going so far as to promote Anthopoulous to coordinator of scouting with the Nationals. He rejoined Anthopoulos in 2010.

In true Mariners fashion they prefer an experienced GM. I personally prefer a successful GM. Experienced and successful don't always equate...which means M's go for experienced over successful which translates into retread.

Stuff like this doesn't help.

" but luring him to Seattle was never going to happen. The Mariners’ brass are supportive of keeping Lloyd McClendon as the skipper next season, and that is likely to scare off any veteran GM candidates."

and

"Lloyd is very popular with the players and the fans, but the simple truth is that he has not done a very good job this season. McClendon handled the bullpen very poorly, with the Fernando Rodney situation being the obvious example. He also made odd changes to the lineup on a nightly basis, including hitting Logan Morrison out of the leadoff spot in June and July."

Lloyd is popular? hmm

Here is my question regarding a search for a new GM: Cardinals are the best organization in baseball for over a decade yet not one member of their staff is being interviewed by Seattle for the spot. Why not? They are interviewing retreads from average to bad teams.

The Seattle Mariners appear to be closing in on naming their next general manager.

Former Angels GM Jerry Dipoto and current Yankees assistant GM Billy Eppler are the finalists and have second interviews with Seattle, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

The report also states that Mariners interim GM Jeff Kingston and Blue Jays executive Dana Brown, among others, have been interviewed once by the team.

Dipoto, 47, was the Angels general manager for 3 1/2 years, resigning from the post in July amid a rumored power struggle with manager Mike Scioscia. A former MLB relief pitcher who worked in the Diamondbacks front office before going to Anaheim, Dipoto made several notable moves with the Angels, including acquiring shut-down closer Huston Street in 2014, signing superstar Mike Trout to a six-year, $144.5 million extension, and trading current Mariners slugger Mark Trumbo to Arizona for pitchers Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs after the 2013 season.

Eppler, who is also rumored to be a strong candidate to replace Dipoto in Anaheim, has been with the Yankees since 2004 and was promoted to New York GM Brian Cashman's assistant before the 2012 campaign. The 39 year old has been up for GM jobs before – both the Angels post that Dipoto won in 2011 and with the Padres last offseason.

The Mariners fired Jack Zduriencik on Aug. 28 after six years as the team's GM.

Been doing some more reading/research on these guys. I actually like Eppler and Dipoto as potential GM's. At the moment I prefer Eppler but either seem to more suitable than Jack Z. Does it even matter who the replacement is the idiots doing the hiring are the real problem.

Dipoto has been on my list for a very long time.

I can't believe he might actually end up here.

Eppler's good, too.
