? We had 2 2nd round picks for 2025? I don't recall that.

I very well might have swapped some picks from other drafts as they blur together. We had a couple rounds with 2 picks this year not counting our comp picks we will get and we traded one of them away. I know Dodson, Fant ( OL ) and Brown ( TE ) all removed comp picks ( which sucks ). It might have been a 3rd. To sick to go dig for it though. Maybe i still have the Adams trade stuck in my head. lol

Hmm, well we should still get a 4th, 5th, and 6th (Lewis, Brooks, Wagner). For Fant/Brown, they weren't signed to very high contracts, I don't think they'll get any compensatory for that, and it's certainly not canceling out the Lewis one we got... how you get a compensatory pick is all based on the average yearly value of a contract the departing player signs and other factors (bonuses may be subtracted can be added if likely to be earned, postseason appearances, etc.). But the APY really drives it end of day, and years don't matter. If the Phins had signed Brooks to a 1 year $15M per, we prob. would've gotten a 3rd.

Now if Brown or Fant did cancel out anything, they'd cancel out the lowest of our compensatory value which is projected by a 6th round for Wagner signing a $6.5M contract. But Fant/Brown did not sign anywhere close to $6.5M (Brown was $3M, Fant was $4.5 APY) and I don't believe that would cancel out this years, it will cancel out any we get next, which is probably none.

But basically bottom 65% of the APY players flat out don't get a compensatory. That's where I'm assuming those two would fall. Someone like Leonard Williams doesn't get a compensatory because he was traded for and then resigned, same kind of thing with Jamal Adams. Teams don't get a compensatory for someone they trade and then receive a major contract. That'd be ridiculous if the case lol. Same with players that are 'cut'. It's only for players where the contract expires and they sign elsewhere. So if we cut Dre'Mont Jones (I can't imagine who the hell would trade for him) and someone resigns him to like an $8M APY (dunno why they would lol, maybe a 1 year prove it) - no compensatory for us.

So we should only have one 4th in theory, the 4th we'll gain from Lewis as compensatory has not been awarded yet. The 4th we traded for Jones was our 4th. And if we do resign him to like a $10M APY, no compensatory in 2026 for the Titans. We never had a 3rd compensatory, and 2nd round compensatory does not exist (nor does 1st).

Oh wait, I'm getting my years mixed up. Dodson/Fant/Brown could cancel out compensatory in the 2025 draft but their ACY value might not be high enough, and we're only talking about prob. canceling out Wagner (with Dodson). Jerome Baker was terminated/released by the Dolphins, so they get nothing.

And reading another article, Dodson will cancel out a 6th that we get... which may actually be for Parkinson (maybe that's why he's not listed on overthecaps compensatory page).

Here's what Field Gull has for the Seahawks 2025 draft:

That makes sense - I completely forgot about the Taylor trade. We should've gotten a comp pick from Parkinson as well (went to the Rams, almost $7.5M per) but again I believe that gets negated by the Dodson trade.

So if you receive a comp. pick for letting a player go to FA, but then also acquire a player of close to equal ACY value in FA, it cancels one another out. I guess it helps teams recover a bit from losing a higher value player to FA, but the NFL has to equal it out if you let a higher value player walk and then acquire a higher value player.

So technically Dodson cost us not only the cap but a 6th round pick as well :tsk:

Sadly rounds 4/5 are comp picks so they're at the ass end of the round. It would've been nice if we could've traded the comp picks instead for Jones/Howell, but you can't trade them until they are officially assigned. I think that's March of the following year, so 2025 for this cycle.

my picks at 18 would be Banks T/G or Walker ILB. Both could/should be gone when we pick but one may be there. Both these guys will be studs in the NFL. I feel both will be Probowlers or close to it as rookies.

I have a sneaking suspicion they take a TE in round 1, Tyler warren if he makes it there or loveland.

I thought that moreso earlier in the season. But Barner really stepped up his game as the season progressed and I would be surprised if they used an early pick on a TE.

If we cut Fant and save $9M on the 2025 cap, I can definitely see an early pick on TE.

A 1st rounder though? I like Warren and Loveland, and it would be funny to have Michigan alum TEs, but I don't think they would make that sort of investment.

Of course a lot will depend on who the OC is we hire.

Not sure. I am usually not a fan of picking TEs in rnd 1, but on occasion there is a prospect worthy of it. I don't dive into the draft like I did earlier in life, so I just don't know where the prizes might be at that spot. Interior OL is our weakest area, but I doubt we do that at 18. We sorta lucked out in each of the last 2 drafts around this same area by getting the 1st D player off the board last year and then the 1st WR in '22, but I am not holding my breath for a similar chance this time. Is it a trade down year?

Ill be shocked if schneider makes a sensible pick that doesn't make me want to throw my tv out the window.
TE, S, CB something like that is what i expect

There's fair criticism to be sure on the overall track record of Schneider early in the draft over the course of the last decade+, but I have zero complaints about the last 3 years of 1st & 2nd rounders: Byron Murphy, Devon Witherspoon, JSN, Derick Hall, Charbonnet, Charles Cross, Boye Mafe, and Kenneth Walker are 8 of the last 9 choices in those 2 rounds since 2022. That's damn good, notwithstanding the "we shoulda picked so-and-so" hindsight.

I don't think you can really say that his picks have been all over the place the last 3 years. OT, CB, WR, DT with our 1st round picks. I know you wanted Carter, and I did as well, but I also understand their reticence to pick a questionable character player again. But Spoon was probably the 2nd best player we could pick at that spot. You hated the JSN pick but he's turned into one of the top young receivers in the league.

I agree regarding the drafts before that where they tried too hard to outsmart the league.

Hawks don't draft TE in the first round. When was the last time they drafted one in the first 2 rounds? 2008 before JS got here was the last time. Nick Vannett was drafted 3rd round of 2016 and that has been the highest drafted TE for JS out of a total of 6 since 2010.

i have philosophical differences here. i dont think CBs should be taken that high, especially when they are 5'9 and i dont think RBs should be taken early at all, they are a dime a dozen.
i think the jury is still out on hall, mafe is good but not irreplaceable. cross was a no brainer and the only OL taken.
murphy was also in a lot of ways a no brainer but the guy i wanted.
jsn is a good wr but maybe the 3rd best in that class 1736910627023.png
