#NYR Really get the sense that potential trade for Marty St. Louis is taking priority right now over getting extension done for Callahan

@LavoieRenaud

Je vous confirme que Martin St-Louis est échangé aux Rangers contre Ryan Callahan. #transactions2014

As per @TSNBobMcKenzie, pending a trade call, Martin St. Louis to NYR is a done deal

Sorry, that's shitty Marty.

But who on the market that costs less has the playoff experience? A huge thing the Jackets are missing is guys who have been to the top of the mountain. They have one ring in the locker room. One. Marty wouldn't be brought in just for what he can provide on the ice. He would be brought in as a veteran voice and a sign to the players in the room that the organization is not joking around.

The other option out there, and it scares the shit out of me, is Tim Thomas.

As for on the ice, the style gap between what McIlhenny does and what Bob does is too big. The team has to adjust too far because McIlhenny has a tendency to overcommit and he is pretty weak on sharp angles. The D funnels the play outside because Bob is weaker down the middle. Marty is big and positionally sound. He would fit the Jackets D scheme far better than Tabasco, single stat line be damned.

He can be big and positionally sound all he wants, but ultimately the bottom line is that he doesn't stop the puck anymore. If a move allows the team to play a consistent defensive style but leads to more goals against anyway I'm not sure how much it helps. And I don't think that Marty's poor numbers can be blamed on the Devils' system not being a fit for him. Especially when considering that it's not a single stat line, this is the 4th straight year that his SV% has been lower than McElhinney's 2013-14 SV% and SV% is not the only number that tells that same story.

I love MSL, always have, and I understand there's likely a lot more working parts. But the captain of a very good team demanding a trade and weakening his former team is just shitty.

I AM a bit impressed that Yzerman got that big of a return for a guy who demanded to only go to one team.

We'll see. Having him on contract for next year makes it up in the air for me. The Rangers got the best player in the deal to this point, no doubt about that. But I don't think that for THIS year the Rags have enough to get a Cup, so that's why we'll see what impact he has next year. Still, those two draft picks are a great return.

Traded away Cally demanding 6.M a season to block shots and total 30 points. We traded a 2015 first which will more than likely be late. A 2014 2nd I like but worth it for Marty. He's still, at 38 a point per game player and has more goals on the season than Cally does points. He's well conditioned to play at the very least, 3 more seasons. This helps us in the long run and now, way more than Cally does.

Does St. Louis walk in and take the 'C' that Callahan leaves behind do you think?

Short vs. long term is the debate with the deal. Short term it hurts TB and helps NYR, but long term it hurts NYR and helps TB. First rounders are never easy to give up.

You're approaching homer territory saying that 15 pick will be late - an injury to Hank and you guys could be in the lottery with Tampa holding your pick.

Keep in mind: 2015 is supposed to be one of the deepest drafts in awhile. So ANY top pick is painful to give up.
