Yep. Mariner options continue to shrivel up. I wasn't a big fan of Gurriel but I like him better than Hopkins or Soler.

Free agent spending this winter, by team:

Dodgers: $717M
Phillies: $172M
Diamondbacks: $122M
Giants: $113M
Royals: $105M
Cardinals: $99M
Reds: $87M
Tigers: $42.75M
Braves: $30M
Rangers: $26.5M
Mets: $18M
White Sox: $16.75M
Orioles: $13M
Astros: $12M
Brewers: $10.25M
Angels: $6.8M
Guardians: $4.75M
Nationals: $4.25M
Pirates: $3.2M
A’s: $1.5M
Rays: $1.1M
Red Sox: $1M
Blue Jays: $0
Cubs: $0
Mariners: $0
Marlins: $0
Padres: $0
Rockies: $0
Twins: $0
Yankees: $0

By @kileymcd’s contract projections, there are still around $2 billion worth of deals to come. Just because a team hasn’t spent yet doesn’t mean its winter is busted. (The Yankees, for example, traded for Juan Soto.) But there are some very interesting teams that haven’t partaken in free agency. And if you take the full value of Shohei Ohtani's deal with the Dodgers ($700 million) rather than its present-day value (~$460 million), he has accounted for 43.6% of all free agent spending by himself.

The Baltimore Orioles are acquiring right-hander Jonathan Heasley in a trade with the Kansas City Royals for rookie-ball right-hander Cesar Espinal, sources tell ESPN.

The Braves released Matt Carpenter . Just the thing for Dipto . Sign him for major league minimum Braves and Padres will pay his salary .

Catcher Tom Murphy’s deal with the San Francisco Giants is for two years and $8 million, with a club option for the third year that has a $250,000 buyout, a source tells ESPN. The 32-year-old vet will serve as Patrick Bailey’s backup. First with the agreement was
@Ken_Rosenthal
.
Good for Tom, 8 million is way more than he would have got here. And he gets to play for a real mlb team.

Only reason..pax..is.
So affordable is his injury.
History...
He is a good pitcher..
When.he is.healthy
But I leave.
Those guys up to mariners..
To decide.who.they.can.

Royals signed OF Hunter Renfroe to a two-year, $13 million contract.
Renfroe is due $5.5 million next year and $7.5 million in 2024, though he can opt out of year two, if he’d like. Swapping out Edward Olivares for Renfroe in their outfield gives the Royals a substantial upgrade defensively, but it doesn’t seem likely to do anything for the offense. Renfroe hit just .233/.297/.416 for the Angels and Reds last season, and his best attribute, his home run stroke, will be muted by the more singles-and doubles-friendly environment at Kauffman Stadium.

Robert Murray of FanSided reports that the Pirates and free agent left-hander Martin Pérez have reached an agreement on a one-year contract.
Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette adds that it’ll be an $8 million pact. The 32-year-old southpaw went 10-4 with an underwhelming 4.45 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and a 93/49 K/BB ratio over 141 2/3 innings for the World Champion Rangers in 2023. He should be locked into a spot in the Pirates’ Opening Day rotation but remains an unappealing option from a fantasy perspective.

Brewers/Mets trade which sent Houser and Taylor to the Mets for some unremarkable minor leaguer, was a clear salary dump. Brewers trimmed about $10 million, given the probable arbitration $$ rulings for the two players. Unlike the Mariners, I think Brewers have a plan for spending that money.

Seems weird they just paid their top prospect who hasn’t played a game all that money so now they have to trim from their big league roster.
