Free agent spending this winter, by team:

Dodgers: $717M
Phillies: $172M
Diamondbacks: $122M
Giants: $113M
Royals: $105M
Cardinals: $99M
Reds: $87M
Tigers: $42.75M
Braves: $30M
Rangers: $26.5M
Mets: $18M
White Sox: $16.75M
Orioles: $13M
Astros: $12M
Brewers: $10.25M
Angels: $6.8M
Guardians: $4.75M
Nationals: $4.25M
Pirates: $3.2M
A’s: $1.5M
Rays: $1.1M
Red Sox: $1M
Blue Jays: $0
Cubs: $0
Mariners: $0
Marlins: $0
Padres: $0
Rockies: $0
Twins: $0
Yankees: $0

By @kileymcd’s contract projections, there are still around $2 billion worth of deals to come. Just because a team hasn’t spent yet doesn’t mean its winter is busted. (The Yankees, for example, traded for Juan Soto.) But there are some very interesting teams that haven’t partaken in free agency. And if you take the full value of Shohei Ohtani's deal with the Dodgers ($700 million) rather than its present-day value (~$460 million), he has accounted for 43.6% of all free agent spending by himself.
Dodgers over a billion now

$1.085 billion for a DH coming off of his second TJ surgery and a pitcher who has never faced MLB hitters in regular season game..

They prolly ought to throw another $400 million at Blake Snell for insurance.

And another $350 million to bring back Cody Bellinger just in case James Outman has a debilitating sophomore jinx.

Detriot is like, the sixth team in nine season to hope they can return Miller to his 2013, 15-game winning form. This further reinforces the fact that lefty pitchers can hang on forever in ML....oh wait, he's a righty. In this case, I have no idea why he gets chance after chance after chance.

I don't get it either. I am only shocked he has never been a Mariner.

MLB loves this. Last years WS was the least watched in history. They want the big boys back in it. Yankees vs Dodgers of decades ago led MLB to the billions we see today. They want to get back there.

It is kind of what they have to do ever reach high ratings. Last years I wouldn’t even put it on the markets, I put it more on there were no real stars in it. Corey Seager is a star but baseball is really bad at turning their stars into superstars.

I really want to skip a decade ahead just to see what happens cause ain’t no way they are making that 2034 payroll unless some big new equity firms steps in. I see in the future more ownership groups look like how the Mariners are except willing to actually spend.

Yankees decided not to match Dodgers winning $325M bid to Yamamoto because: 1) they thought $300M was right offer, 2) they didn’t believe anyone should have a bigger deal than Gerrit Cole. NYY offered optout after 5 yrs but not a $50M signing bonus. Highly unlikely it mattered.

Guardians acquired OF Estevan Florial from the Yankees for RHP Cody Morris.
Florial heads to Cleveland as a clear-cut change of scenery candidate after getting into just 48 games combined over the last four seasons in New York. The 26-year-old former top prospect tore the cover off the ball this past season for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, slashing a robust .284/.380/.565 with 28 homers and 25 steals across 482 plate appearances. There simply wasn’t a spot for him with the Yankees anymore following their recent offseason additions of Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo. He’ll presumably get a shot in spring training to win a spot on the Guardians’ season-opening roster.

Rangers signed RHP Diego Castillo to a minor league contract.
Castillo was limited to just eight relief appearances this past season for the Mariners, and spent the majority of the 2023 campaign stationed at Triple-A Tacoma, posting a bloated 5.13 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 50/35 K/BB ratio across 47 1/3 innings of work. The hard-throwing 29-year-old former closer has made 258 appearances in the majors since 2018 and certainly has the talent to be an effective relief option again. He’s ostensibly a reclamation project for the defending World Series champions heading into 2024.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the White Sox have agreed to a one-year contract with free agent backstop Martin Maldonado.
Robert Murray of Fansided was the first to report that the two sides were close to an agreement. No word yet on the financials, but the deal is expected to include an option for the 2025 season. The 37-year-old backstop’s value lies almost entirely in his defense, game calling and the way that he manages a pitching staff — as he slashed a woeful .191/.258/.348 slash line with 15 long balls and 36 RBI across 407 plate appearances with the Astros in 2023. He’ll share the load behind the dish with the newly-acquired Max Stassi.

Jose Dicen of the Listin Diario reports that authorities in the Dominican Republic raided two homes on Tuesday in an effort to find Wander Franco.
Franco was not found during the raids. Dicen notes that the Office of the Attorney for Children and Adolescents in Santo Domingo is looking for the 22-year-old infielder for allegedly having a relationship with an underage woman in Puerto Plata. There had been some speculation that Franco may avoid charges altogether after the opted to return to the Domincan Republic in early December — as it’s unlikely he would’ve returned there if there was threat of arrest or other legal entanglement. Franco remains on administrative leave and is still under investigation by Major League Baseball. This seemingly doesn’t bode well for his chances of playing in 2024.

Blue Jays sign Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The guy can play third, where they have a hole from the departure of Chapman. But his bat can't carry the offense expectation of a third baseman. Makes me think his acquisition is a prelude to something bigger coming.
