Suppose the following happens:

1) we let Brooks walk

2) we re-sign all the other starting free agents from last year (Alex, Carlos, Goldson, etc.)

3) we do NOT go after any other free agents

4) we build in the draft and grab a OLB, WR in the 1st and 2nd, and then CB and all the other needs in the later rounds.

Would you be happy with this?

I think I would be ok with it.

Not at all, we need to at least get a WR in free agency. Not saying it has to be one of the big names but there are plenty of WR's in free agency we can get at a good deal. I also expect brooks to walk and for us to pick up a pass rush specialist OLB in free agency that is also not one of the top names available.

For me, I'll be a bit disappointed that we didn't make a move for a WR, whether it be Colston, VJ, Wallace, Garcon ot whoever.... Especially Colston and Wallace, both of which provide excellent deep threat and with Colston, brings solid route running and catching abilities to aid Alex and his at times inaccurate throws.

We have two WRs under contract for next season. So no, I wouldn't be happy.

Hey now, don't forget about Joe Hastings.

I'm assuming the lead-off question means no other big-name signings. Obviously we'd bring in some backup and STs types. I think I could live with that. We need to bring in probably at least two WRs, but I don't mind all that much if those guys are second or third tier talent, although I'd probably bring in at least three guys if we go in that direction (unless we re-sign Morgan). It wouldn't be my preference, but I could live with it.

Though having said that, if we do let Brooks walk, we've got a pretty big hole at OLB, with only two guys signed. We'd need to get at least one guy who is capable of being a tolerable backup at that spot and then probably draft there as well.

What if we get a WR in the 1st round? Then we'd have Crabtree, rookie, Williams, possibly Ginn or Morgan back.

Not good enough?

So at OLB we'd have:

Aldon, Haralson, 1st or 2nd round rookie, some free agent like Travis LaBoy

At WR we'd have:

Crabtree, 1st or 2nd round rookie, Williams, Ginn or Morgan, late round rookie or some other cheap vet

Is this too frugal?

Signing a WR could alleviate the need(or is a pressure?) to draft a WR in the first(pending if Wallace does not cost a 1st).

Say we sign a fan preferred FA WR, it allows us to address the OLB if prospects like a Curry, Perry were to fall, or take a better CB or C/G if available....

He said let's assume we resign everybody except Brooks.

Actually he said this:
we re-sign all the other starting free agents from last year (Alex, Carlos, Goldson, etc.)

And since we signed Edwards before last season with the intent of upgrading our WR core one would assume that would be kicking Morgan to third string. Unfortunately injuries screwed that plan up. So no, I don't consider Morgan a starter and would be even more upset if he was brought back to be one.

We can't start next season with two of Crabs, Morgan, rookie as our starting WRs. That would be a failure imo.

I'd rather re-sign Brooks and not the rest of those players mentioned (depending on how much money he wants). I've been saying for a while he's the Niners' most valuable FA.

Haralson/Rookie will be opposite All Done next season. Unless a Marathe Miracle happens.

Well if it's gonna take an arm and a leg to sign an OLB the Niners might as well sign Super Mario & draft an OLB Like Manny Lawson who excells in coverage.

...Or bring Manny back on the cheap? Is he a FA?

P.S. I was a big advocate of letting Manny walk the first time.

We have to hope there is no team out there that is willing to meet Brooks with an 8 mill per deal. Which is very likely, given his past. I can see Brooks returning like Goldson did last off-season.

the draft should be about filling needs and depth with more than one season in mind. roster spots should be filled through free agency.

if we let brooks walk, we should look into signing someone that can at least back up. i'd hate to force a pick to fill a roster spot. although i wouldn't mind zach brown in the 1st to replace brooks. wagner in the 2nd could work and it seemed like we had some interest in him. i'm assuming our scouts think he can fit in at olb.

I'd add at least one more guy, even if he's not likely to make the roster.
