Good lord nobody is going to offer Mayfield a 100 million dollar contract unless he plays like Jared Allen or Mahomes for a stretch and that is just not going to happen, but a season ending injury certainly could happen. He's not going play for the Browns.
Baker already plays QB like Jared Allen ..... lol

How many teams carry 4 in season? Some teams just go with 2.
I realize that. I posted the same question just in a different way and I got the Cleveland Tornado Spin. Nothing to see the FO knows what they are doing...

When it’s two the, the second guy usually wasn’t drafted four years ago and has only 10 career completions.

A backup and a nobody. If nothing else they’ll sign McCarron or somebody after cuts.

Cam would be hilarious. That’s an option.

Inflation. Every non-stopgap starting QB not on a rookie deal is making $25M+ per year, and all but Brady and Cousins are on contracts of $120 million+. That includes Goff, Wentz and Tannehill, who are all making $30M a year.

If Mayfield had a 2022 year like 2020, he'd definitely be in line for a $100M five-year contract in 2023 as a starter somewhere, which would be way below all those guys.

As things are now he'd be lucky to get a three-year $25M contract. And that won't improve by him sitting.

(Mayfield did have a four-game stretch in 2020 where he averaged 300+ yards, 2.5 passing TDs, and a 70% completion rate, so yeah he probably would need a Mahomes or Allen stretch, but he's capable of it.)

That's why I think if the Browns don't move him or cut him, he'll want to play. But he'll want the Browns to do an apology dance first. Which they would probably do.
Yep.

On the Seahawks, since he better than anything they have right now and Carroll is a bit long in the tooth for a major rebuild.

If Watson's out and they cut Mayfield they don't even have a third QB on their team right now.

And one of the teams likely to snap up a cut Mayfield is the Steelers. (That would be fun.)

I have a hard time believing they’d cut him if they can’t trade him. Just make kissy face and play him.
They would roll with Brissett and Dobbs as the backup.

Not even the Browns would do that. They’ll sign some free-agent journeyman backup if they’re in that situation - or get one back in a Mayfield trade along with a pick.

Brissett is capable. He has more offensive talent with the Browns than he did in Indy.

It's been reported that the Browns are now offering to pay half of Mayfield salary. Point being that the Browns are not only willing to trade Brown but are continuing to bargain to make it happen. So yeah, highly doubtful that Mayfield is on the roster on opening day, no matter what happens with Watson.

Possibly, but just Dobbs behind him is insanity.

The Falcons traded Ryan for a 2023 third-round pick. They weren't on the outs with each other, it's just that Ryan wasn't their long-term future.

Mayfield is also obviously not the Browns long-term future. A fourth for Mayfield would be a reasonable return, but his contract is out of whack compared to Ryan's, and there aren't a lot of suitors.

The idea is to pay to facilitate a trade, not just to do anything they can to get him off their roster. They have the money to spend and they don't need to off-load salary for cap reasons. Paying part of a salary to trade a player isn't that uncommon. The Browns were playing at being hard-asses before and not paying any of the salary, as an initial negotiating position.

If the other teams think they can get Mayfield for free, the Browns' fall-back position would be to keep him and play him. If nothing else, they have to talk about that possibility at the bargaining table.

The main difference between Ryan and Mayfield is that there was no point in keeping Ryan around to go 7-10. The Browns are in position to do make a run this year if the QB play is adequate.
