The NFL is a hard salary cap. You can't spend more than the set limit. There's no luxury tax for going over, you simply can't go over.

There are rollovers that allow you to spend more in certain years and you can structure deals and get creative to prolong payments. But it's still a hard cap.

My context of "hard cap" was no pushing money to future with signing bonuses, voidable years etc.... but yes technically by the definition you are correct.

Remember the no salary cap years (I think it was a couple around 2010)? That was amusing... the smart owners/GMs were like, "Cut all these fuckers with huge dead cap now...." Ha!

That's exactly right. Any team can convert salary to signing bonus and spread money and create all the room they won't. Most won't(mine included) and just hide behind the cap, but the Eagles are trying to win
