I'm sure that this was probably explained in this thread, but I thought once you graduated you could go anywhere you wanted. As long as you had eligibility remaining.

There is a SEC rule that doesn't allow it between SEC schools. Grad transfers between SEC schools still have to sit a year unless released.

He's been told he can go to any school he wants outside the SEC and play this year, or he can sit out a year and play @ Georgia in 2017.

That's not really true. There are some (ethically indefensible) limitations on the freedom to transfer and still play. For example, the SEC forbid transfer to other SEC schools (although that rule can obviously be waived.) Also, you have to enroll in a graduate program that is not offered at the original school (a rule that is not only absurd, but so easily circumvented that it is a complete joke to have the rule on the books.)

According to AL.com, Saban met with Smith and his parents last week to discuss their disagreement. After speaking for over an hour, Smith’s mother Samyra asked her family to step out of the room in order to speak with Saban alone.

A ‘verbal battle’ that lasted 20 minutes ensued, which led to Saban storming out of the room without conceding his point.
