I think they need to change it slightly because with the current regular season rules, were likely to see more ties. The more I think about it, I now realize that the previous OT rule was better to avoid ties than the current one. If not for Kubiak stupid decision, we were staring at our 3rd tie of the year.

Thoughts?

I would never have changed the old rule. I remember at one point it was something like 55% of the time the team that got the ball first won. That may have been before this day of offense though. I liked the old rule. Part of football is stopping the other team. I think it's worse to have a team go for it every 4th down because the other team kicked a FG and you get a chance with nothing to lose than to have just left it. BUT...I don't mind the ties. Maybe if you play 5 quarters all square, you should tie...

Actually could find a stat but seems more like 60% from articles that popped up

Each team should get 2 minutes to score starting at their own 20. It requires both offenses to put together a good drive, gives both teams a shot, and a field goal can still beat you.

I wouldn't mind the current rules if a tie was not possible. But if the game must end after 1 OT then go back to the previous rules

I preferred the old rules, but I'm fine with it as is.

This. Changing it again will likely make it more convoluted. Simpler is better. The college system is ridiculous, basically a re-imagining of a shootout format.

Nothing wrong with a tie, they've been part of the NFL all along.

True but they'll be more frequent in this format imo

But this rule only been place for what? 2 or 3 years. Issue with this format is if one team scores a fg on a 5 minute drive then the other team follows up with a fg on a 6 minute drive or so. It leaves 4 or 5 minutes for someone to win the game which is difficult especially if its 2 defensive teams.

Perfect. Makes my case even more. Since the new rules went into effect there's been 5 ties in the last 4 years. Under the old rules, the previous 5 ties took place over a 19 year window.

Saw in the wiki link that three of those games had missed FG's. Crummy kickers.

Why do you hate ties so much?
Yeah, at some point you just got to throw your hands up and say neither team deserved a victory at some point if anyone cares at all about safety. Truth be told teams are going to avoid ties like the plague anyways (Kubiak can attest) so I don't think it'll be an issue.

My thoughts exactly. I never understood the cry "we never got the ball". Well last time I checked defense and ST are part of football too so stop crying and stop them. But I agree, if they go 5 quarters tied then that's not the end of the world.

Cairo Santos might be the first to win a game by missing at least. Made my heart jump and then was bewildered due to the reaction of the players.

I was at my uncle's house watching the Jazz - Bulls first Finals. It came down to the last possession with the Bulls having the ball. I just knew Jordan was going to make a shot and win. Anyway, he goes and shoots it, makes it, but for some reason I thought he missed it. So I was happy as F because MJ doesn't miss game winners (yes, I know, he has). My uncle looked at me and said something along the lines of "WTF are you so happy?"
