Correct me if I am wrong but since 2002, they are the only Division to put every team in the Super Bowl? If the Falcons win they are the only Division to have 3 teams win the Super Bowl (Stupid Sticking Panthers...).

Funny that in 2002 the NFC South was considered the worst of the new Divisions with a record of 0-1 in the Super Bowl, now they will either be 3-2 or 2-3.

I believe you're correct. The NFC West came close though. Only team not to make the superbowl from their division since 2002 are the Rams. The only 2 divisions since 2002 to put at least 3 teams in the superbowl.

2002? Might as well go back 1 more year if you're going back 14 and put the NFC West in.

2002 makes sense since that's when the division realignment happened. 2001 NFC West isn't the same as the NFC West today.

Ah, good point.

Its just a really weird distinction because the Bucs stellar D was such a long time ago

Tougher to be consistent when all the teams in your division are capable.
I don't know if its quite that.

Bucs had a dominant D. They've had some minor success since then but Id hardly say they've been above average in the capability department. They took a lot of risks in drafting and had some coaches lose support from their teams pretty quickly. They bottomed out twice getting McCoy and Winston which isnt a bad bottom out combo but McCoy and many of their pass rushers they've gone through have gotten hurt over the years.

Saints don't believe in defense. No consistency when that happens. The year they won the Super Bowl they lived on turnovers but they gave up on that D Coordinator who...well, you can't blame them.

Falcons went all in on Matt Ryan from the start, got close, made a smart gamble on Julio Jones but then lost ALL of their depth. A rebuild is pretty easy when you have a franchise QB but Matt Ryan took a step backwards last year for some reason but then took 2 steps forward this year. The Falcons have been a model drafting team lately so its fair to say they've been capable.

The Panthers have also been capable but they allocated a lot of great talent in funny ways that got a solid GM fired but when they bottomed out, the hit the jackpot with Cam but the coaching has been really inconsistent. I think they've been somewhat consistent but had some growing pains this year and lost some games they should have won. (KC says hello)

To his point though, the NFC South has the 3rd best record in games played outside the division since 2002. AFC East is first because of the Patriots, next is the NFC East.

It seems that teams that bottom out in the NFC South don't stay down so maybe that represents capability.

The lack of parity during this time period in the AFC seems fairly well documented. The NFC South hasn't had a Raiders, Browns, Rams or Jaguars type of team.

Capable? Capable of what?
Of putting together a team that can win the division. Most divisions have at least one team that has not proven able to do that. Some divisions have more than 1

Being a playoff caliber team is harder to sustain of course in this parity era than reaching the SB once. But every team reaching the SB at least once is still a strong feat in a decade and a half roughly.

I'm not even sure if the AFCE have had all 4 teams in the playoff over that same time span....I know the AFCN (CLE) hasn't.

In 2001 the NFC West Consisted of the Panthers, Saints, and Falcons, you know 3/4 of the NFC South.

It is. Its also the point where the Rams went in a downward spiral that would make Lindsey Lohan proud.

I do think you're right in that the NFC South has been the most competitive division. The Patriots honestly make everyone else in the modern era look lame, though.

04 Rams went to the playoffs because they beat the Seahawks 3 times that year. It also led to Michael Vick putting on one of the all time Madden performances on them in the playoffs.
