2014 NFL salary cap projected at $130 million; Gives Rams flexibility - Turf Show Times

Dilip Vishwanat

A larger cap number could make the offseason a little easier for the Rams.

The St. Louis Rams got a nice break on Thursday. Pressed up tightly against the cap -- with roughly $600,000 in available cap room projected this year -- news arrived that the cap is expected to jump to $130 million this season, $4 million more than was initially projected.

Of course, the NFL says to wait, the cap number hasn't been officially set at this point. Nevertheless, this is a good sign for cash-strapped teams like the Rams.

As for the Rams, think about this less in the pursuit of outside free agents and more in the realm of the decisions the team has to make regarding its current players. The Rams have three likely targets for cap casualties: Cortland Finnegan, Harvey Dahl and Scott Wells. Together, they count $20.5 million against the cap this season. Cutting all three would net $12.5 million in savings.

There's been some talk that the Rams could ask Finnegan to take a pay cut. The added cap room gives them additional flexibility for such a move, or similar moves with Dahl and Wells. All three players are overpriced, dealing with injuries and on the downhill side of their careers, but they all three play at positions where the Rams are thin on the depth chart.

Of course, an additional $4 million in cap space could also make it easier for the Rams to re-sign Rodger Saffold

Essentially that 4 million will take care of the rookies... Dahl,Wells,Langford, probably Finnegan need to go...

Finni-gag had to be one of the worst signings ever. Had one decent (not great) year, and one horrible year. Rated 129 out of 130 CBs in the league last year. Could save a boatload of $$$ by cutting him and placing a poster of Deion Sanders out in the secondary instead--would be just as effective.

Come on Boss.. It was his vision!! He couldn't see!! He was like Stevie Wonder out there trying to defend a pass.

Here's a link to a site that updates where teams are against the cap 4 times a day. It's not updated to the new cap yet because it still operates under the 2013 year but still a nice resource.

nice find! we should be around 15-19 mil after it's all said and done. Not counting rookie contracts of course.
So with rookie contracts we should be around 12-14 mil (best case scenario) which will give us plenty of room to resign some guys and at least fill a couple holes. I don't think we'll make a huge splash in FA this year. We'll probably pick up a couple stop gap guys and develop talent through the draft. We don't need anymore Finnegan's or Cooks

Well I hope his vision has recovered enough that he can see himself out the door because the Rams are almost certainly going to cut him. For crying out loud, receivers were running circles around him so much last season that he must have thought he was surrounded.....

You're beginning to worry me Jacob. I still need my detractors to keep things interesting and lively. Either you're getting smarter or I'm getting dumber......or vice versa. :laugh3:

I put it at 12-14 mil because as of right now we don't know 100% on who we're going to cut. IF I HAD TO GUESS we'll be around 12-14 cap room (including the rookie contract estimates) (including Jake Longs 4mil he has to give back) (including Wells, Finnegan, Langford, and Dahl being cut) (including the salary cap being pushed up another 6mil).
There will also be one or two restructures. There always is.

The end.
