NBA president of basketball operations Rod Thorn and vice president Kiki VanDeWeghe acknowledged in a recent interview with ESPN.com that the league office, at least in an exploratory fashion, has weighed expanding the dimensions of the court and the introduction of a 4-point shot.

In a sitdown with ESPN's TrueHoop TV conducted during All-Star Weekend in New Orleans earlier this month, Thorn and VanDeWeghe spoke of both concepts mostly from a hypothetical standpoint but did concede that both ideas have been presented for discussion at a league level.

The NBA has employed a 94-by-50-foot court since the 1940s. But VanDeWeghe -- who went to two All-Star Games as a player and most recently served as an executive and head coach with the Nets before joining the league office in 2013 -- confirmed that the growing size and ever-increasing athleticism of players today prompted discussion about expanding the playing surface.

I personally don't like either of these ideas. The three-pointer is enough. Young players are already forgoing working on their midrange game for dunks and three-pointers. They don't need an even deeper shot to work on. You shouldn't get 4 points for a lucky halfcourt heave at the buzzer either.

I also don't think they should widen the court. Defense is difficult enough under the current rules. If players want to hang out around the baseline three-point line, pump fake, and drive, then they take that chance of stepping out of bounds on the initial push off. Giving them more space to do that just creates yet another disadvantage for the defense. I can't think of any reason to lengthen the court.

I think it is amazing that the office is discussing these things, you do not have to like the ideas but the fact that the office is discussing every thing with an open mind is only all the better for the league, the game and the on court product.

I like the idea of expanding the court if they gave back some Defensive power to counteract the extra offensive edge it would provide.

I do not like the idea of the 4 point shot.

Love the idea of a 4pt line but how do you do that without expanding the court? Defenses have too far to recover now anyways. I bet Curry started weeping when he heard that as well.

A 4 point shot would be dumb. The average for 3 point shooting percentage in the NBA historically is right around 35% IF that.

If there was a 4 point shot the average for that shot would probably drop another 10 percent or more. It would just create even more horrible shot selection than there already is, imo.

Both won't happen and shouldn't happen IMO. It is good they are look at possibilities at expanding the game, but this is not the way.

I think if they would do anything it would be extending the court lengthwise though.

Turns out, this was typical ESPN making a story out of nothing.

Rod Thorn simply said in an interview that it had "come up" in past conversations. The NBA says that "no serious conversations had been given to a 4-point line. ESPN.com chose to make a story that doesn't exist".

Things like that get thrown out as ideas in meeting all of the time. Very few receive any real consideration. In the 80's there was an idea of raising the rim to 12 feet and those talks lasted about as long as the 4-point line.

I don't know if widening the court would necessarily be bad for defense if the distance for the corner 3 is moved back as well.
