man...Dodgers SP is pretty lacking this year.......
Injuries are the reason there (Buehler, Reyes, Syndegaard, Nelson, Pepiot, May all starters on the IL). But the bullpen just sucks.

I think they decided not to push hard this year to save their shekels for Ohtani.

And the bullpen has been worse.

To be fair, the pitching staff has had a ton of injuries. The only one who has stayed healthy has been old man Kershaw.

Syndegaard blows.

Urias just got back- he got pushed around by the Royals tonight but he is in a contract year and will have all incentives to get his shit together.

Buehler is legit- though he was not always really consistent.

prospect pitchers get hurt all the time.

they are going to have a lot of work to do in the offseason. Kershaw is pitching great- and he wont be there forever nor pitch like this forever. Urias might be gone. Buehler will be coming off Tommy John.

they have some work to do on offense too. Freeman, Smith and Betts is a good place to start- but they need some of the guys like Vargas, Outman, and Lux (once he is healthy) to become a lot more consistent.

Always thought Outman missed an opportunity not choosing to become a pitcher

And when they land Ohtani they pick up both a top level starter and hitter

That's the prevailing theory out here. There was some thought that they'd be able to trade for him in season, but the Angels actually have a winning record.

Guardians are basically remaking the whole team on the fly while competing. To be in the market they are and to do so is pretty impressive.

all starts with the pitching development. No one produces home grown pitching better. Sucks their best pitching prospect in nearly 2 decades is injured--- but Bibee, Williams, and Allen are going to be good, cheap pitchers for them for a while.

Yeah he's not getting traded and that's good for LA, just wait and not give up any players for him.

Not hard to 'compete' in that division this year.

true--- but they did beat hte Rays in a playoff series (though a short one) and then took the Yanks to the limit last year.

even if they get rid of Bieber.......which they might--- they will still have McKenzie, Civale, Quintrell, Bibee, Williams, Allen---- and hopefully Espino at some point.

the Espino injury kills me. I really wanted to see him pitch in the majors this year. He is their first true super prospect since Lindor.

Then so are the White Sox only 6 games back despite being 13 games under .500. Yet again, it’s the worst division in baseball and it not close.

And they’re 40-42. Nobody does it better. That’s the best 40-42 team I’ve ever seen.

nobody develops pitching better that is for sure. They do a great job drafting, and targeting under valued guys in trades. Bauer, Clevinger, Kluber were all trade guys.

If I was another team and the Guardians asked for pitching I would mark that guy as a guy not to trade.

they just trade elite pitching and dont lose a step. They have dealt guys like Bauer, Kluber, Clevinger, Lee, Sabathia (going back some time now of course)- and just keep getting new guys.

Bieber is prob. next to be traded but next year they put out McKenzie, Civale, Quintrell, Bibee, Allen, Williams- and maybe Espino- and still have some decent other minor league guys like Cantillo and Beytonfield for depth.

the thing is- most times paying starting pitching long term back fires too. Sabathia and Lee had some great years after being traded but Clevinger, Kluber were done- Bauer had a great short year in Cincy- and then was okay for one year in LAD.

Guardians just cant pay guys like Wheeler and Nola a combined 50M or whatever. I think Nola is up after this year too and will get a big raise if he stays healthy.

Phils actually have a couple good pitching prospects for the first time in a while in Painter and Abel--- but Painter has some injury issues. That is the thing about young pitching- if you have 4-5 guys that are really good- maybe 1 fails, 1 or 2 get hurt, and you get 2-3 good cheap starters that are controllable- which is probably the best asset in baseball.

Just to develop a guy like Nola and Suarez puts the Phils over a lot of teams in the pitching development category.

its not easy for the Guardians either in that they never draft high. There is an advantage to picking in the top 10 or so.....which they have done twice in recent memory--- one Lindor- one Frazier....

Mickey Moniak #1 overall, whoof. Bohm #3....ehh.....not bad...not great but not bad.

there are some teams that just never develop pitching.....Orioles, Blue Jays, Angels (though Detmer is going to make it I think), Mets not really- only one I can think of off the top of my head is DeGrom..., Cubs, Cardinals, Rockies off the top of my head...
