Tracy mcgrady’s “max” deal in 2000 got him less than $10m that year….

Now inferior players like jaylen brown get 6x that

Shit, I remember people lost their minds when superstar level NBA players first started getting $1 million per year. lol

this is so far beyond that

the pirates would be committing about 40 percent of their revenue to one player if they signed Ohtani.

You mean the same guy that demanded a piece of the gate to coach at the worst program in the country?

Chet and Wembamyama need like 1k cheeseburgers each over the next year.

Zion can teach them.
KD was pretty close to that skinny at first, they'll make it work.

It buys you an opportunity to be in the mix for 6 of 7 years or 6 in an 8 year window. Small market teams can absolutely win WS. However, when they do it’s an anomaly and a one and done.
Yep....spending is no guarantee but spending more can certainly help if a team is willing. I mean, Cashman is a terrible GM, but NY is usually in the mix due to their bankroll.

Detroit had no issue getting guys to sign. Your owner has to be willing to spend. The Tribe were easily a top 10 fanbase for a good 20 years and the ownership killed it.

in the NBA this definitely applies but with baseball it comes down to ownership. If your owner treats their baseball team like a year to year business rather than a multi decade investment they're in the wrong sport.

Now...I say all that to say that what the Dodgers are doing is unattainable for all but a handful of teams and is an absolutely atrocious precedent for where the sport will go.
Nailed it with that middle line. as to the last line, no need to spend like LA, NY, etc......but if you will not keep up with Milwaukee, MN and Cinci in a contending window why buy a team?

Honestly Chet’s weight has not been an issue at all. He’s been playing extremely well, he has beefed up a bit after being drafted

Teams can afford it

The reds just spend ohtani cbt money on 3 mediocre players

They tell themselves they can’t pay for them, but they could, just choose not to

Then maybe those teams need to move or get ownership that can spend. Teams like Tampa, Pittsburgh, and Toronto have all been to and won the World Series.

They just have to do it a little differently and can't sustain it for more than 2-3 seasons at a time.

I was a die-hard Rams fan through the Georgia Frontiere and John Shaw years. Until the snake eating bitch decided to tank the team so she could move it...they would put teams together who could compete, but would never spend to get that final piece or 2 that would give them a real chance at getting past teams like the 49ers and Cowboys and into the Super Bowl.

I never got mad at the 49ers or Cowboys...I got mad at her and John Shaw for not doing everything they could.
First, I have no issue with teams spending since it's within the rules.

But if a team like mine has an owner who wont spend how are the fans supposed to force him to sell?

Why I think Browns fans who want Haslam to sell are not thinking clearly. what if he does and a mizer like Dolan buys them?

I have no doubt many teams COULD spend more but wont. My team dropping to near the bottom in payroll is a shame.....but totally on the owner and him wanting to make more yearly profits. Team could easily spend league average and not lose money. But he wont.

This is especially true as teams hide more money in the real estate surrounding the ballpark and claiming it’s not baseball related income

So they don’t use it to improve the team

So we are citing results from the 90s? The economics of baseball have completely changed.

This is way past a willing owner man. That's the point. No one is going to buy the Pittsburgh Pirates and build a competing payroll to the Dodgers. It's literally impossible. That's different than the Tribe being cheap fucks and letting Jim Thome skate back when the economics could somewhat match.

You simply can't commit a 12 year deal with no means to pay it.
Right.....I have no issue when my team trades guys as opposed to offering them megadeals. Especially pitchers. But that's no excuse not to pay league average payroll when the team can compete.

Right now they are using the TV deal as a reason to not spend (meaning not knowing what the deal will be with Diamond).......but other teams with the same deal like Atlanta and Texas wont drop much in payroll.

There is that subset of fans that embrace struggling franchises as a badge of honor.
This is kind of true.....I mean, I do see many fans here who stick up for the Dolans and their penny pinching ways. I don't get it.
