NBA's 2017-18 salary cap projection is lower than expected

Not sure if this is a reaction to the weekend or its collective bargaining season. Either way, those that are on the cusp just got screwed

It's just a projection, not official. The projection is based on how much revenue the league expects to make in the upcoming season. Once that 2016/17 revenue is gathered up, then they'll make the official cap for 2017/18.

But, this could be an indication that owners are attempting to set the stage for voiding the CBA in 2017. Their entire argument 6 years ago was based on doom and gloom financials that did not accurately represent the state of the league. If they are "projecting" less revenue, perhaps this is the first step of their processs to bail themsleves out of the stupid decisions they have made over the last week.

ITs a lower raise than they expected. Its still going up 6-8 million.

They are trying to force teams to spend money with the cap floor at 85. They expect each team to be able to have a superstar. There are not enough superstars to go around and they allow 3 or 4 to gather on one team, so guys that do not deserve max are getting max.

I dont want to hear about these max players getting more. What about forcing teams to give their players under contract the equal raise these max players are getting?

That's a big difference in revenue projection.

$5 mill in cap room per team is $150 mill.

And that $150 mill in cap room represents some percentage of the overall revenue that the CBA dictates must go to nba salary.

So, Durant goes to GSW and the revenue projections drop that much lol?

Considering the NBA is going to have to pay out north of 150M this year again to even out the revenue distribution to the players association, I'd say that cap is likely to rise much more than this early projection. Initial reports around this time last year was a projected 89M cap, which rose to 94M.

Interesting but yeah these contracts in the NBA are spiraling out of control.

I wouldn't leap that far. The league office just makes projections based how incomes have gone from the previous season(s). They typically come in on the low side with their projections as well. Plus, my guess is if the owners do choose to lock out, money won't be the issue. They aren't that dumb because they know everyone realizes the cash influx in the league is getting. They'll use other issues like player movement (contract length) or something else as the issue. Personally, I don't think there will be a lockout, at least not a prolonged one. Things are too good now for both sides. My guess is there will be an opt out to renegotiate the CBA, they'll fine tune some things (like age restrictions, contract pay raise percentages, etc), and it'll be done before the season starts

Yup, may make a difference for some of the big FA's who have contracts coming up who changed teams recently. Have to be somewhere 3 years to re-sign by being able to go over the cap. So teams would have to get them done, then get their Bird rights guys done if they are going over the cap (and would add on lux taxes).
