Well, when I did my computer rankings I did the exact same thing to the stats, and there is nothing arbitrary about it. In fact, I would say it's a basic requirement for getting good results.

Unless you believe running for 100 yards against New Mexico St is the equivilant of running for 100 yards against Alabama and think they should for some reason be treated equally.

I don't, and that is why I like advanced stats.

I think Ohio St got hot at the end of the year when it mattered the most.

Stats are based on the entire year, not just the end of it. That includes the Ohio St team that lost to VT.

And it was extremely obvious that OSU team at the beginning of the year was not the same one as at the end. The players gelled. Our QB, who was 2 weeks fresh off of becoming the starter, learned and grew. This happens in college football quite often. By the end of the year, we were a well-oiled machine and clearly the best team in the nation.

It's funny that people are still bitching that Ohio State (which won their conference outright) got in the Playoff & TCU & Baylor (neither program won the conference outright) didn't. The Big XII needs 2 more teams + that CCG. W/o a CCG the conference could face the same dilemma in the future.
