If it costs anything like a Solarte or Odor then it's too much. His best year in the AL was 2008 and he's has one great year in the NL and been mostly alright since then. And career Dempster has a better k/9 than Garza. I have never been sold on Garza, and probably never will be. I know he's a back end of the rotation pitcher, but I don't see him as an upgrade unless he costs anything but cash.

Yangervis Solarte??

I honestly do not see Garza being an upgrade over Ogando and a combo of Grimm/Tespech.
Wait what? I'm not sure you are very familiar with Garza. He has been very successful against AL opponents and is consistent. Ogando has talent but the guy can't stay healthy, and Garza is proven. I'll go Garza over Ogando every time.

Successful in in AL years ago. He wasn't amazing in the AL. He was pretty good, but I wouldn't trade for pretty good. I also don't think the word proven means anything. He's pitched in the post season where in 5 starts he's only gone 31 innings. Seems pretty average to me. If he's cheap it might be worth looking at, but I do not think he's an upgrade over anything Texas currently has. Also that 6.04 ERA pitching in RBiA...Yeah that's not exactly making me want the guy.

If you don't think he's an upgrade over Grimm/Tepesch I don't know what to tell you. He clearly is.

Yu/Holland/Garza/Ogando/ (Perez/Tepesch/Grimm/Lindblom/Wolf)

inspires much more confidence than

Yu/Holland/Ogando/Perez/ (Tepesch/Grimm/Lindblom/Wolf)

And considering Ogando is still hurt, I don't find that to be a reliable option since he hasn't been healthy nearly all year

Not sure how anyone could argue with that.

Last time I checked 200+ innings with a mid 3 ERA is better than average, he's #2, #3 guy, and he's a good consistent pitcher. Proven means he has a large body of work, with good results. Unlike Ogando with half a decent season under his belt. What, you think someone is going to trade an ace? Yea, no. In 2011 he had a 3.3 ERA with 200 IP, so it wasn't years ago. He was having a decent year before he got injured last season too.

Years ago in the AL is what I clearly said.

Eh. I think it's a push in the end more than anything. Those two wouldn't be making any potential post season starts, and say even if he did, I am not sure he would be worth that Texas gave up for him even if it was the money. Sorry, but the guy doesn't exactly inspire me.

I've been as bearish as anyone on Garza over the years, and he's an improvement, no doubt about it, to state otherwise just seems absurd

Improvement for 2 months? As it stands the Cubs are talking extension with him now. That would probably drive the price up. It will largely be the offense that decides the Rangers' fate anyway. If I were to go after any Cub it would would Nate Schierholtz.

we only have 1 real hole in the OF if we lose Cruz with Martin, Beltre and Murphy + Baker. but I forgot how much you hate Murphy.

Scotty ... came to the thread late ... but while Martin certainly is part of the formula depending on a another rookie to be the second of three starting OFers ... and then depending on a #4 and a guy who is really an infielder together to be the third starting OFer would trump any really expensive move for an SP you also need.

TEX needs a LFer who hits like a LFer and not like Joaquin Arias.

Lots of people fell victim to Murphy's magical babip 2012. He's a 4th OF and always has been. I really hope he's either off the team next year or is only used in a platoon.

JD sees how wash has used him. He won't be on the roster next season.

Unfortunately he's stunk against RHPs this year, so he's even been useless in a good platoon

if cruz does get suspended lets hope it happens before august gets here so he will be eligible to return for the late september stretch run and hopefully get his timing back if the rangers are still in contention. a failed appeals process (unless it carries over into the offseason) would actually hurt the rangers and they would not get cruz back by a potential playoff run

as for a trade idea, rios is obviously the best bat out there, maybe the whitesox could package him and peavy to the rangers if the price isnt too high. ive thought about the possibility of the cubs packaging garza and soriano but i really dont like soriano. hes a lazy player whos power numbers are inflated by the wind blowing out at wrigley. imo, garza is the better, and healthier, pitcher

No interest in peavey whatsoever. I'd be much more interested in a garza/Schierholtz package.

Same, pass on Peavy

its hard for me to put stock in any position player who plays in silo known as wrigley when the wind is blowing out...... although, shierholtz is intriguing, but not mych of an upgrade imo, his resume is far from impressive. he's more of a 4th outfielder....ala murphy

Murph is a nice, popular guy ... but he's a #4. He's not back in 2014. You don't need to sign a guy who would only be a platoon option ... when you don't already have the guy on your roster he would platoon with.

I don't think TEX would go looking for two guys of Murphy's caliber to fill one job.
