I just can't believe that the Sox were able to DFA Barnes and get something back.

These deals are good for the game, IMO.
The Pads are open for business and appear to be "all-in". Will they be able to reach an agreement with Machado now?
Bichette signing with the Jays is a good place to start. They need to lock up Vladdy, too.
Javier is getting paid for his post-season last year. He might have left some money on the table, but the Astros made him rich beyond most people's wildest dreams and he just has to go out and pitch.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Padres and free agent right-hander Michael Wacha have agreed to terms on a contract.

No word yet on the exact financial terms of the deal, which is pending a physical. The 31-year-old right-hander was the premier starting pitcher left on the free agent market after struggling to generate a ton of interest this offseason. He compiled a strong 3.32 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 104/31 K/BB ratio over 127 1/3 innings (23 starts) last season for the Red Sox. He'll bolster an extremely deep Padres' starting rotation and could wind up shifting to a long relief role sometime later this year.

Was a great signing for the Sox, but man it sucks they couldn't get anything out of it. He was on the IL around the deadline

Good luck with that. I guess if he's going to do it, better to do it after this year when he's still "only" 31.

who knows. He was fine in 2019 and signed with the Braves, but only made one start and his season ended. He tried a comeback in 2021 with the Dodgers, but he experienced arm pain while throwing a simulated game and ended up on the 60-day IL. Nothing in 2022, though he says he's pain free now. Hope he succeeds.

I have no problem with him opting out. It is his right, and he negotiated that option when he signed the contract.

But why go public with his intentions? He now makes this coming season somewhat awkward and if for whatever reason he needs to change his mind, he makes that process more awkward. Why not proceed throughout this season internally planning to opt out, but not making it official? Makes it a 1000x easier to pivot if needed.

This could be a public audition for other teams. If he has a good season, he will get a mega-contract. If not........

It removes the question coming up over and over against over the course of the season

And in the process it isolates him in the Padre clubhouse and he loses the leadership aura he has gained over the last few seasons. He has basically told everyone he wants out and is now just a hired gun.

There is a possibility that the owners will fire up their printing press and give him a huge contract. I heard a bit of a discussion about this on MLB Network today and they seem to think that it's either him or Soto long-term.

Man, how huge is it that Bryce Harper took the deal he did. He’s a relative bargain at 25 million a year. You look back at the Machado Harper off season and it’s clear which guy was the right guy to pick AND it’s the better contract.

I'm good with the Harper deal but I don't know if the Machado deal was that bad for the Padres. They got his best years and if he's planning to leave after this season he has lots of incentive to have a great season this year. But I'm thinking if he does have a good enough season and opts out of the contract and some other team gives him More than 32 Mil. and More years, then That team is most likely going to be disappointed.
