Just because Arias, Riot, Belt, Blanco, etc are doing OK now does not mean they will continue to play at this level all year. I think a "stud"-ish 2B or a big bat for LF would be a likely target. If these are not needed, a RHP for 6th/7th could be a target (cheap), but Mota could be this guy, as could Hembree or Bochy (heck, even Heston has a shot at a BP slot).

My gut says 2B or BP arm. I think Blanco/Nate lock down the 3rd OF spot and Belt gets BETTER, not worse. He just needed the confidence (both his own and Noggin's) to play well.

Hahahaha. Samesies. This is better because it is more concise.

All well and good, but I'm afraid if the starting pitching doesn't get figured out (with either Zito going back to April/May Zito or Lincecum going back to any other Lincecum), none of that will matter.

It has been and always will be about dominant pitching with us, and if 40% of our starts we have a .200 winning percentage, just forget about 2012.

I don't disagree. But with 40M+ going to our 4th and 5th starters, nothing is going to happen there.

They are what they are.

Probably the case, yeah. So basically if Tim doesn't get his shit together anything else we do is rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

I don't know that I would go that far. There is a wide gap from a serviceable 4th or 5th starter to Tim Lincecum with his shit together. If Timmy gets his shit together, you can start engraving the NL West trophy. If he improves slightly, you can start talking shit to every Dodger fan that you know. If he keeps pitching how he has been pitching, it's going to be a struggle to the end. I don't see any Leo movies until mid-September at the earliest.

I'm down with this, except in degree. The bolded: it's a struggle we'll surely lose.

If we can make it into the TRUE playoffs (post-Wildcard round) than I like our chances anyway. I would put our 1-2-3 against any in the Bigs.

Completely agree, which is why winning the division is so critical. It would be anyway, the new format makes that explicit (and one reason why I like the new format).

But especially now, if we truly have only 3 solid starters. If we need to burn one to win the play-in game, we have to use one of the weaker 2 in the next round.

100%

Now, add 80% Timmeh to that as a 3/4, and I am getting my finger sized again...

That's what it comes down to, are we going to get 70-80% of Timmeh back in time to save the season or not? It's truly unanswerable at this point.

I think that's fair to say, yeah. So what do you think they'll do?

Find a 2B? A SS? Another starter (and if so who does he replace, Z or Tim?) ?

:noidea:

This year could be tough, with the extra wild card spot fewer teams might be sellers. ESPN.com just had a post about the Royals being buyers (!). Too bad, they have this Sanchez kid who'd look good in our rotation.

That cuts both ways -- a reduced pool of sellers and a larger pool of buyers means the doyers will have to give up more to get help or get outbid altogether.

Timmy will be fine; Zeets will be average; we will score 4.5 a game and win the division. We will probably add a small piece at the deadline.

Same could EASILY be said for Hairston, Abreu, Ellis, Herrera, Capuano and Eovaldi. You presume the doyers will continue to play above their heads and that we will regress. Isn't it more likely Timmy, Belt, Stamos will improve?

2009 Draft Preview: Projecting the first 10 picks, By Jonathan Mayo
6. San Francisco Giants: Michael Trout, OF, Millville Senior HS, N.J.
And now we have our first high schooler going off the board. This is a little bit of a leap, but there's no doubt Trout has been a late riser on Draft boards. Word is the Giants have been in heavy to see the toolsy outfielder and they are an organization willing to take whoever they want, regardless of perception. In that regard, they could also have interest in Tate. They could have an interest in Wheeler if they wanted to go with the young power arm instead.

7. Atlanta Braves: Zack Wheeler, RHP, East Paulding HS, Dallas, Ga.
This one almost seems to make too much sense, with the Braves loving power arms and taking guys in their own backyard. Wheeler fits both of those criteria. If Wheeler is taken above them -- which is extremely possible -- they could look elsewhere for a high school pitcher, perhaps Purke or fellow lefty Tyler Matzek.

So they had the G's looking at Trout (establishing himself as a stud in the majors as we speak), Wheeler (expected to be a stud in the majors as early as next year) and Tate (complete and utter bust, AKA, a Padre pick). Although they may have taken the second best of the 3 mentioned, they still scored with the pick (never mind what happened afterward)

It's kind of cool that Trout was even on their radar. Too bad they didn't think to trade back and get Trout and an extra pick.

Giants are now third in the NL in stolen bases, fourth in all of MLB.

Strangely, we are second in MLB in SFs. That somewhat mitigates our poor avg with RISP.

We are second in MLB in triples (24). Oddly, both the Yankees and the RedSox are tied for last with 4. This is a testament to the Little League ballparks they play in.

Why the FUCK does it seem EVERY FUCKING GAME that in one of the middle innings the Gs donate a fucking 5 pitch inning to the other pitcher???

Belt -- FPOM
Chez 3 -- 2 pitches
Stamos -- 2 pitches.

Can't those fuckers watch a couple......frustrating.

It's quite literally not the Giants Way. They just don't emphasize that approach with our minor league clubs and in the show.

Posey has a few too many FPOMs too.
