What are the Giants needs on the roster?

seriously...

I wonder if Whitey would not have maybe been a better option. This would have allowed more flexibility with C3PO and Posey, while keeping good D behind the plate and not introducing any variables to the pitchers.

I'd bet you Whitey was their second choice.

Maybe a RHH first baseman? Unfortuneately, Pill shat the bed. Even then, not a big deal as Panda and Posey can do that.

Better question: who got DFAd from the 40 man to make room for Christian?

Mota?

I don't think Mota is on the 40. There was an open spot.

Mota was put on the restricted list, and was removed from the 40-man back in May.

Next 17 games makes or breaks the Dodgers. I'm going to call it right now - they play less than .500 ball from here to the rest of the year, unless they pick up pitching and hitting help.

Possible, wouldn't surprise me. But it also wouldn't surprise me if they go back to wrecking shop when Kemp is back (there's your hitting help).

And I don't really see the pitching weakness (maybe in the pen a bit). Their rotation is at least as good as ours especially if we are now down to 3 reliable starters.

I think they'll nab Dempster and put Harang in the bullpen. That and Kemp coming back should take care of a lot of their problems. Depth will be an issue going forward, but that is the case for most teams during the Dog Days. Hopefully, 2010 Uribe doesn't put on his cape.

If that happens and we don't make moves of our own, we are well and truly fucked.

That would be a good move.

It sure is. We'd be in (more) trouble.

I can't recall a season where the Giants were anywhere near the top of the NL West that they didn't make a move at the deadline. You weren't saying they won't make a move, but I am certain that they will.

I think that's fair to say, yeah. So what do you think they'll do?

Find a 2B? A SS? Another starter (and if so who does he replace, Z or Tim?) ?

:noidea:

This year could be tough, with the extra wild card spot fewer teams might be sellers. ESPN.com just had a post about the Royals being buyers (!). Too bad, they have this Sanchez kid who'd look good in our rotation.

Just because Arias, Riot, Belt, Blanco, etc are doing OK now does not mean they will continue to play at this level all year. I think a "stud"-ish 2B or a big bat for LF would be a likely target. If these are not needed, a RHP for 6th/7th could be a target (cheap), but Mota could be this guy, as could Hembree or Bochy (heck, even Heston has a shot at a BP slot).

My gut says 2B or BP arm. I think Blanco/Nate lock down the 3rd OF spot and Belt gets BETTER, not worse. He just needed the confidence (both his own and Noggin's) to play well.

That's a great question. I think it all depends on who is on the DL in late July. Obviously, a middle infielder would be nice, but who is available and for what cost won't become clear for another couple of weeks (and, or course, that information won't be as readily available to us as it is to SabeySabes).

As great as FYWW is, I think the bully might need a slight boost. This isn't a go get a RamRam and Loogy Lopez scenario, but another right-handed seventh inning guy doesn't hurt (yes, I'm still as happy with the Pagan trade as I was the day the Giants made it). Luckily, those guys aren't extremely hard to come by. Unfortunately, the front office will have to outbid the Dodgers for one, if the Bums miss out on Dempster.

I'm still alright with selling the farm for Castro even after his recent boneheaded displays. The kid is young and cost-controlled, but that isn't the type of deadline deal that Sabey usually makes. I think a Keppy-like deal is in our future. A Keppinger and a RamRam with some average to above average health with the rest of the roster could be very helpful for this squad (now, where could those types be?). I don't put too much stock in September call-ups, but that can be a big boost to the health concerns, and possible bullpen issues.
