I know what your saying. Take Bum off the table and the Giants seemed to have whiffed on 5 top fifty picks. But we'd expect the average team to whiff on 2.5 of those, right? And only get about 9 WAR from the other 2.5 - say two and a half Nate Schierholtzs.

BTW, Tim Alderson seems to have righted himself, and Culby and Noonan may yet provide some positive WAR as backups.

Agreed. It is a tad too early to write Noonan and Culby off just yet. Jackson and Fairley are done. Alderson can be graded in two separate manners; as himself, or as Franchez.

Culby got his cup earlier this year, and did not look horrible. Noonan is looking good enough that he will almost certainly get a cup by, at worst, next season. However, to say either is expected to be a solid MLB starter would be a HUGE stretch.

While Alderson has had some success this year after being moved to the pen, his numbers are still less then stellar. I have not seen any scouting reports on him, however. He has been promoted to AAA, though, which means one of two things; his stock is rising, or he us nothing more them org depth. I am not sure what it means in this situation.

If we want to grade the pick on Franchez, let's spell out exactly what we got there. First, for arguments sake, let's ignore the fact that we resigned him, and assume the entirety of his time with the G's is a result of the trade. This means that for the 22nd pick, we payed a guy approx 15M for approx 1 seasons worth of near all-star level 2B play and post season play that added to a WS victory. Personally, I would give this pick a B/B+ based on this. I do not rate it higher because a) he was not a MAJOR key to the WS win (but he was a key), and b) we paid him a shitload of money to rest up for his next potential contract.

In later rounds, I misspoke earlier on Craw. He was taken in '08. However, there was some very minor success in the mid-ish rounds. Runz was taken in the 9th and Edlefsen in the 16th. We also got Turpin (traded for Ramirez) in the 8th, Paterson (the Snakes primary LOOGY) in the 10th, and Odle, Otero and Bond (Odle and Bond have been ok in the minors, and Otero is currently on the 40).

So, in summary, the draft has netted...

1) an Ace-level pitcher
2) a WELL paid part-time 2B at a time that we REALLY needed one
3) a key 7th inning RRP during the WS run, and eventually a key part of getting a solid current OF
4) two potential MI journeymen
5) an oft-injured 7th inning RP

In a normal draft, this would be a solid get. However, for a draft with 6 1st rounders (and admittedly, no 2nd, 3rd, or 4th rounders), I have a hard time giving it better than a B/B-.

I have a problem with taking credit for guys acquired via trade (draft pick XYZ got us ABC in trade) AND trying to take credit for a guy lost via roster mismanagement (Paterson) or traded away. It should be one or the other - you can't fish from both sides of the stream at the same time.

I did not include Patterson in the summary. As for Franchez/Alderson, I kinda agree. I think that is a personal opinion call. That's why I looked at that pick from both sides.

Alderson has regained his mid-90's fastball - that's why his stock is rising. Right now they've moved him back to a starting role. But he may still end up in the pen. In the off-season he started a long-toss routine, to which he is giving credit for restoring his velocity. In writing this, I'm reminded of the rumors that he was drafted where he was by the Giants because he was an easy sign. Perhaps a good analogy for the 2007 draft is this: the Giants played in an extra inning game and went 6-1, leaving 5 men on base, but the one hit was a grandslam.

And, yeah, I wouldn't even consider including Franchez's WAR as part of the 2007 draft grade. Separate entities.

From MLBRumors:

Three Bidders Remain For Padres

The sale price is expected to be at least $800MM, broken down into $600MM for the team and $200MM for part of the team’s equity stake in FOX Sports San Diego.

The Padres own 20% of their regional sports network; the Giants own 33% of a network that should generate much more revenue. If the dodgers sale put a ceiling on the current price for the Giants at two billion, then the Padres' sale puts a floor on that price.

Big prob with the PAAAAdres TV deal is that it only reaches approx 40% of SD residents. They bailed on their last deal because they were only reaching about 55%.

Typical PAAAAdre management...

LOL. What the hell?

Once Fox got the PAAAAds, they started playing hardball (pun fully intended) with the cable/satellite companies. Cox and Time Warner basically said FU, so NO cable subscribers get to watch the Maxis.

Total Jumble Fudge. And they wonder why no one goes to the games...

And, with the equity stake, that's a double hit to revenues and marketing efforts. :tsk:

If it weren't for Giants fans, the Maxis wouldn't draw 500,000 a year...

That's one hole plugged. Now just need to address the middle infielders.

I hope we don't now have an incipient 4th and 5th starter problem

If the biggest problem on your team is your 4th and 5th starters, you are in a pretty good situation.

Further, if your biggest problems on your team are your holders of three Cy Young Awards, you are enjoying life to a pretty high degree.

Funny, my 'enjoyment' of Lincecum and recent Zito starts isn't at a 'pretty high degree'

And I didn't say we aren't in a pretty good situation. gp was noting we may have filled the 1B hole. I was noting we may have a new hole developing in the starting staff. When Z was pitching like Tim and Tim like Z, it was a wash. Is Zito's last start the beginning of a regression? Will Timmy get back to decent just in time to offset that?

While I agree that Christian has EARNED this, I question whether it is the best thing for the Giants. He really does not fill any needs on the roster.

At the same time...

1) Neither did Huff.
2) I am not sure there were other, better options available.

With this move, another of the '10 roster leaves the active 25, leaving only ...

Posey
Sandoval
Bum
Timmeh
Cain
Romo
Affeldt
Lopez
Casilla
Nate

Zito was not on the playoff roster
Huff, Wilson, Mota, Franchez, Runz are all currently on the DL/inactive
