I think the answer to this is pretty obvious.

Yes he told his brothers on his team and his friends and family.

Then he got to the Senior Bowl where there's a fuck ton of national media who's job it is to start digging for dirt and personal information on these NFL prospects. The media sharks began to circle so he acknowledged it and by doing so he kept it from becoming a bigger deal.

IMO a "no comment" from him probably doesn't work out so well.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking - it's pre-emptive damage control.

He's earned the respect of his teammates, and this should be a non-issue in a professional enterprise. I doubt ESPN will see it that way, lol.

Not the same really. If those hetero dudes wanted to go to the beach with their GF nobody would really care. If this guy went out in public w/ his BF or something it would be made into a big deal. All he's done now is got the story out of the way before he starts his career. It's probably a great feeling for him that he doesn't have to spend the rest of his career in hiding.

That is nothing against gay people at all. I don't care personally one way or another.....but there are a lot of people out there who seriously live through a lot of pain because they want to be straight but just simply aren't.

For people who think he is going this for attention, keep in mind that he has been openly gay for longer than he has been openly good. He wasn't an NFL prospect entering the season. He likely came out to his teammates for personal reasons

Yeah, he had come out to his college team-mates a year ago (and the lack of publicity speaks well of how much his team-mates liked him). The announcement is just preemptive as it would have come out in draft vetting.


The good - at some point America, including football players, will have to start treating gay people like human beings. Sam coming out will be a step in bringing those issues to the forefront.


The bad - GMs will shy away from this guy not because they could care less that he's gay, but instead because he'll become Tim Tebow light - much more scrutiny and attention than his play warrants, and a distraction in the locker room because of it. Tebow would be on someone's roster right now except for the circus that accompanies him.


The ugly - would his fellow players have a legitimate point that he should not be in a room where they are naked? The reason we separate women and men changing is that it's inappropriate to see naughty bits you'd like to tap (or be tapped by) when changing. One might even legally view such a situation (being forced to be naked with someone who likes to have sex with your gender) as sexual harassment.


The truth - this young man is in for a difficult time. America is still too homophobic to really accept him, but if he is willing to put up with a few years of hell then the path to full acceptance of gays will progress.
