And so, at last, the Heat have an opponent.
It will be the Chicago Bulls… and it will start with games in Miami on Monday and Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The teams split four games this season.
Here are some of the storylines:
1. Will Derrick Rose play? Play with emotions, perhaps. Play with his food, maybe. Play in an actual basketball game? Not especially likely. He wasn’t ready to test his knee against the league’s lesser lgiths in April. Why would he break it in against the Heat in May?
2. Who else is unavailable? The Bulls are battered. Joakim Noah proved again why he’s one of the NBA’s toughest players, excelling in the Brooklyn series while dealing with plantar faciitis. Taj Gibson and Nate Robinson played through the flu. Luol Deng needed a spinal tap to test for meningitis, and he spent Friday night in a hospital. Kirk Hinrich has been in a walking boot.
3. How many hard fouls? LeBron James was irritated by what he deemed “non-basketball plays” on March 27 in Chicago, where the Bulls ended the Heat’s win streak at 27. And he uncharacteristically lost composure. The Bulls will test him.
4. What’s different from 2011? Plenty. That postseason, the Bulls had home court advantage and bludgeoned the Heat on the boards in Game 1. Then the Heat won four straight. Miami is much stronger now. The Bulls won’t have Rose, Omer Asik or Kyle Korver — plus the others who are currently ill or injured — though Jimmy Butler has been a nice find and Marco Belinelli did good work against Brooklyn. In 2011, many gave Chicago a shot. Now, no one will.
5. What’s with Wade? Dwyane Wade shot 53.6 percent in two games in the United Center, in contrast to his historical struggles in the city of his youth. His bruised right knee should benefit from the eight days of rest, but Butler will make him work.
My prediction: Heat in 5. Miami will prevail. But it won’t enjoy much of the process.

agree with BK... Heat in 5. With mostly close games the whole way through. Miami is just to good. DRose is a complete bitch.

I think we should see a lot of birdman in this series...I would like to see Spo use Bosh and Bird together because of the Bulls front court. If he does that we will be fine on rebounds.

Heat in 5 seems to be consensus. We shall see. What is the latest on the Derrick Rose circus?

Who are your picks for the second round other than the Heat? Not sure yet if I would prefer to face the Knicks or Pacers in the ECF as they both play as tough and give us trouble.

I think the Spurs will take the Warriors and the Thunder will take the Grizzles - It will be in the WCF that missing Russell Westbrook will come back to hurt them.

Let me start off by saying that Brooklyn is absolutely pathetic... How do you lose a game 7 at home against a team missing Rose, Deng, Hinrich and has an injured Noah... Just pathetic.. what a laughable excuse of a team.

With that said, Chicago is going to be a fun series. I say Miami in 5, but only because I think Robinson has one of those games where he is going to just light it up..

:agree: For the life of me I was so frustrated for Nets fans at how horrible they played last night. Noah out hustled the entire team. Overall, the Heat needed to play the Bulls. The likely ECF opponent will be significantly harder then the Bucks or Nets. Chicago may be undermanned, but they'll make you work for your victories and get you out of your comfort zone, which I think Brooklyn would've done the exact opposite.

I have no preference for Indiana vs. NY, although I will be rooting for the Pacers simply because they're playing the Knicks. Indiana is the more consistent team while the Knicks have the higher ceiling. Something's going to have to give.

To remain consistent I will not predict on our series. But I think the Pacers beat the Knicks in 6 (I know I'm reaching). I actually have the Grizzlies in 5. I think they've already felt the loss of Westbrook in the first series and they facing a significantly more difficult and defensive team in Memphis. I have the Spurs in 6. I think Curry will go off in 2 games, but overall it's Curry or bust for Golden St. and Popovich is one of the best in the game at game planning.

You're not reaching on the Pacers series.

I have the Pacers in 6 also. The Pacers are a better version of the Celtics. They have a better defense and better offense than the Celtics so if the Knicks struggled to score 90 as they did against the Celtics, I can't see them beating Indy twice

dang BK.. we agree on Pacers/Knicks too. Pacers in 6. I also have Grizzlies in 6 and Spurs in 5.

Miami should win in 5.. I could see a sweep or 6.. but anyone who is actually taking Chicago in 7 is either an intense heat hater or a Chicago homer.

Some tweets from Ira

When it comes to Wade, he is playing and starting Monday. Everything else is semantics.LeBron not unanimous, one first-place vote went to Carmelo Anthony, who finished third behind Durant in the weighted balloting.Wade finished 10th in MVP balloting.
