Morning Briefing: Can Mets continue offensive fireworks against Marlins?

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets are exactly halfway through their 162-game regular season. And with a 44-37 record, they’re on pace for 88 wins.

“It’s the same thing we saw last year,” manager Terry Collins said. “We were up and down. We went through a lull where we didn’t hit. This year we’ve gone through a lull again, maybe for a lot of reasons -- medically probably could be one of them. But we came out of the gate with huge expectations. Our pitching staff kind of has been up and down due to some minor injuries and guys trying to get established.

“But as we head into the next seven days of this homestand, I like what’s going on right now. And hopefully we finish strong and get into this break strong, and then come out of the gate playing well in the second half. This is where we caught fire last year, and we need to do it again.”

The Mets play home series against the Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals before the All-Star break. Washington leads the Mets by five games and the Marlins by 6½ games in the National League East.

Morning Briefing: Jose Reyes set to return to Queens

NEW YORK -- Jose Reyes is headed home after an 11-game stint in the minors.

Reyes will be activated for Tuesday’s 7:10 p.m. ET game against the Miami Marlins.

He hit .176 (6-for-34) and exclusively manned third base while playing for short-season Brooklyn and Double-A Binghamton. Edgardo Alfonzo tutored him during that stretch.

Reyes is expected to reclaim his No. 7 New York Mets jersey, which Travis d'Arnaud will give up.

Manager Terry Collins reiterated Monday that he intends to bat Reyes leadoff, with Curtis Granderson relocating to the No. 2 slot. The logic is that if Reyes gets on, first basemen will have to hold him because he is a stolen-base threat. And that should open up a hole on the right side of the infield for Granderson, even with teams heavily shifting against him.

The Mets have not announced the corresponding roster move. The simplest (and therefore likeliest) transaction would be to demote Matt Reynolds to Triple-A Las Vegas. The alternative seemingly would be to designate for assignment Alejandro De Aza.

Steven Matz (7-3, 3.40 ERA) opposes left-hander Wei-Yin Chen (4-3, 5.11) as the Mets look to up their winning streak to six games.

David Wright will be placed on the 60-day disabled list to clear the 40-man roster spot for Jose Reyes' addition. Wright is not expected to return this season.

Matt Reynolds' locker has been cleaned out. Appears he's the demotion to make room for Jose Reyes' addition to the roster.
