The past doesn't negate the responsibility to review the current without prejudice. If a hit is clean, it is clean. The past shouldn't change that, IMO.

Forget about just Meriweather - this sets a very dangerous precedent. So basically the NFL is stating that they don't really care about what actually occurs on the field - they will just go by reputation. You can take this a step further & basically just let the refs call whatever they like and be as biased as possible during any given game.

Sounds like old Roger's ego is getting the best of him. I would also again bring up the subject of how in the world a wife beater gets the exact same penalty as someone who is suspended for an extremely questionable call. This really stinks.

And the Irsay issue is yet another hypocrisy. Simply focusing on the BM issue here, but couldn't agree with ya more.

Meriweather is like the kid that has been caught stealing by the same cop three times already. He cant walk down the street at night without the cop now thinking... he is up to something. Any time its questionable the league is going to assume he was aiming for a head shot and suspend him.

I'm biased...I'll admit it. Never liked the kid. Seems dumb.

He does that shit in PRACTICE...to his own teammates!?

Was glad to see him leave the Bears, and we were woeful at the position.

If he was worth keeping the Pats wouldn't have released him after having 12 INT's in 4 years, but Belichick knew this guy was going to be a problem. At least they were right on this guy.

You are probably right. IMO - this just makes the NFL just like any other corrupt police force. They call things not to be fair or unbiased but rather just to do whatever they please. Sooner or later some of this crap is going to catch up to them.

BTW - they are not concerned about player safety. They are simply worried about protecting themselves from future player lawsuits. Their only interest will always be $$.

I am so sick of this garbage. Yes the hit went helmet to helmet...but Smith made himself smaller. If Smith were standing straight up that hit would have been to the sternum.

I wish Merriweather would just start hitting at the knees.

Eventually they are going to make any tackle attempt where the tackler leaves his feet a penalty at this rate. Just get it over with, install flags at the waist and make it a two pulled flags rule. Then maybe I can see my grand daughter in the NFL some day. :L

Agree 100%. As a matter of fact I think rules very similar to this are already in place for Tom Brady.

He doesn't have to start hitting at the knees. He just has to stop going for the kill shot on defenseless receivers. Take a look at Ryan Clark's tackle earlier in the game. It was text book in that he wrapped up at the waist, lifted and body slammed. Merriweather never attempts to wrap, but launches is body like a missile. The only difference this time is that he did use his shoulder to lead the impact and not his head. I'm not a fan of the rule, but it is not going away. If BM can't tackle other than kill shots, we need to get another S before training camp is out. We also need to stop making excuses for him. He has deserved every one of those fines and suspensions. Hell, this was was worse in that it was preseason. In a meaningless game, you risk injury to yourself or another player.

I do, however, have an issue with Goddell and the penalties he levies. They make no sense and appear to be arbitrary.

They are exactly that. Apparently hard hitting is equivalent to beating your wife. Weed will get you banned for life. But kill some one and you are able to be reinstated. Taking PEDs will get you four games, and if you can get some one to say the cup had a leak, you might even get off scott free. But you are right, if BM had simply opened his arms instead of lowering his shoulder, then he would have been fine. But the truth is you can be the hammer or the nail... I would prefer the hammer.
