There's going to be way to many ticky tack calls like that that's going to ruin the flow of the game.

Yep. Refs have a hard enough time comprehending basic penalties, so why give them something simple like this to go crazy with which in turn will further distract them from getting basic calls right?

I can see it now… ref fails to call DPI but instead throws flag for taunting.

Correct! I can also see a great play made towards the end of the half or the game, get flagged for taunting causing the team to get pushed out of FG range or out of the RZ with limited time left.

Yep. And the foil-hatters will just claim the game is rigged because we know they won’t be consistent about it.

Historically it's been after the play. Thus, if the play gained enough for a 1st down it would result in a 1st down. The penalty would then be applied and it would be 1st & 10 at the new spot. It would not be 1st & 25. EG: play is at midfield. The offense gains 15 yards. After the play there's a taunting penalty. The play would result in a 1st down. The penalty would move the ball back from the 35 to midfield and it would be 1st & 10 from there, (again).

If was 3rd & 20 from midfield and the play gained 15 yards it would result in a 4th & 5 from the 35. The penalty would then be applied and it would be 4th & 20 from midfield.

Coming from the Mara family... someone who should be very knowledgeable of all that was LAWRENCE TAYLOR.... That man lived for the "talk"

And don't give me that bullshit about different eras... This is still football and these men all possess the same toughness... Both psychological as well as physical.

If only the owners possessed that same mental fortitude as their players.

Personally I don't want taunting in the game. Even if it's a player on my team and the taunting results in the opposing team committing a 15-yard penalty at the end of a game which moves them out of FG range.



I understand that you can't remove all of it but by the same token you can't allow all of it either. It'll end up being 'if in doubt, throw the flag', and the onus will be on the players not to take a risk. No good solution.

Could a taunting penalty be called presnap? Lots of shit talking before a snap.
I think this rule change will end up a trainwreck.

FT lane violation in NBA. Committed every game, rarely called.
Then when they actually call it, what a joke.

In the NFL, I feel the same way about 7 men on the line of scrimmage.

It's a rule, enforce it.
So tired of seeing two WR, each exactly in the same position, and supposedly ONE is one the LOS and the other isn't.
C'mon NFL.

RULING SHOULD BE:
7 men on the LOS,
Other players NOT on the LOS need to be 3 yards back, Make it Clear. (except the QB under Center)
