Willie Bloomquist. Local high school guy, pac-12 and then the M's, twice.
Micah Owings. Crappy pitcher, but an excellent hitting pitcher. Batted .283/.310/.502 (106 OPS+) over 219 plate appearances. 48 of those plate appearances were as a pinch hitter (he hit .244/.292/.444 with 2 home runs)
The game changed with Ripken/Nomar/Jeter/Arod.
Used to be, you didn't need your SS to hit, just field everything hit at him. Those guys changed all that.
Well, he did get an MVP award in 1974. I remember when he was a minor leaguer with the Denver Bears.I'm not sure who you would mean by mediocre.
Jeff Burroughs? He was always pretty good, just mired in obscurity by playing on bad teams.
