I always liked Lane Adams. He was a scrub, but it seemed like every time he got a hit, it was a big one. Never was gonna amount to much, but I liked having him come off the bench

I had irrational love for Alvaro Espinosa. Even nicknamed him "Automatic" Espy. Couldn't hit his way out of a wet paper bag, but was a hoover with the glove.

I find it interesting that guys in my mind were great defensive players who could barely hit. Yet, most fans would say hitting is the most entertaining part of the game.

The game changed with Ripken/Nomar/Jeter/Arod.

Used to be, you didn't need your SS to hit, just field everything hit at him. Those guys changed all that.

Pokey Reese

Fielded the final out of the 2004 ALCS and the last time he was on a major league field was the final out of Game 4 of that World Series.

We loved ol' Pokey during his days in Cincinnati

Jim Rice.

Wait. I hated that guy.
I feel like there's quite a few Yankees fans who, if given the options of losing 1 of their World Series in exchange for Guidry winning the MVP over Rice, they'd take it without question.

I'm not sure who you would mean by mediocre.

Jeff Burroughs? He was always pretty good, just mired in obscurity by playing on bad teams.

He was an MVP

How about Michael Young?

Nah, but it is endlessly irritating that in 1978 - 25-3 1.74 ERA, and winning the 1 game playoff, is not the MVP

Contrasted with 1986, Clemens goes 24-4 2.48 ERA and is the MVP

Rice and Mattingly had crazy similar numbers in the respective years, more HR for Rice, higher BA for Mattingly. Rice edges out Gid, but Mattingly is the runner up to Clemens.

How does that work?
