I don't want the 49ers to lose Fangio, but, I have to admit that this isn't exactly like the Norv Turner situation. I think we might be incredibly lucky that Ed Donatell is on the coaching staff. He was a defensive coordinator from 2000-2006 for the Packers and Falcons... so I think the 49ers would be OK with promoting him to D-Coordinator if they lose Fangio, considering Donatell has years of experience under his belt.
I'm going to list the rankings of his defenses real quick. (Points/Yards)
2000-- (14/15)
2001-- (5/12)
2002-- (12/12)
2003-- (11/17)
Now, with the Falcons
2004-- (14/14)
2005-- (18/22)
2006-- (15/22)
Nothing mind blowing, but a really interesting thing is how the Packers and Falcons both dropped the year after Donatell was fired.
2004 the Packers fell to (23/25) and in 2007 the Falcons fell to (29/29).
This might hint that Donatell gets more out of his players than his replacements, as I doubt there were huge roster overhauls.. so I think if the 49ers lose Fangio, Donatell may be more than capable to keep the defense going with these players. Plus, lets not forget that Harbaugh was praising Donatell for noticing things on film that helped destroy Tampa Bay.
So, basically... I'm just trying to argue that the 49ers won't be completely screwed this time around for losing an important coordinator, since they're fortunate enough to have a qualified assistant on the staff who seems to have a fairly decent track record with defenses that I don't believe come close to matching the player talent level that these 49ers have.
