The Brewers have agreed to sign free agent starter Matt Garza on a four-year, $52MM deal, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). News of the club's pursuit of Garza was first reported by MLB.com's Brewer Nation blog.
Garza, a CAA Sports client, is a 30-year-old righty. His strong track record on the hill has been accompanied by injury questions that presumably limited his value on the open market. His signing will not cost the Brewers draft pick compensation, as will be the case for fellow top arms Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez. In the end, Garza will receive only a $3MM greater guarantee than that given to Ricky Nolasco by the Twins.

Guess we will now see the dominos fall with the rest of the SP market.

I wonder if this makes them any more willing to deal a pitching prospect for Ike Davis?

That is a solid pickup for the Brewers. Him and Gallardo will make a formidable 1-2 in their rotation

Could be a nice signing, if he stays healthy for us. Have to hope Gallardo goes back to prior form and Lohse just has to be what he was last year, the 4 and 5 starter spots are interesting. We didn't do a whole lot to shore up other areas of concern like the bullpen or 1st base.

Brewers are much better than what there record was last year. Braun was suspended, A-Ram was hurt most of the season, Hart missed all of last season. They got -2 WAR out of their 1B all season.

Lineup should be much better with the addition of Braun and A-Ram. Rotation should be better as well.

Yuniesky Betancourt played 68 games (46 started) at 1B for the Brewers last year. He had a .257 wOBA. He batted .194/.220/.347 as a 1B. Chris Davis and Miggy had higher slugger percentages than Betancourt's overall OPS.

I am one who believes like a lot of others that a change of scenery would help Ike get back on track, the Brewers should look into that one.

Did the Brewers make a move recently for a 1st baseman?

They brought back Lyle Overbay. However, I think they are hoping that he will be bench depth vs. being their starting 1B.

This is the best SP signing of the off season. Sad, but true.

Who says its true? There are still a lot of FA SP left. And Garza hasn't stayed healthy the past 2 years. Just because Tanaka is unknown doesn't mean he was a bad signing, he was seen by most as the best SP available. $22 mil per year is nothing for the Yankees, especially if Tanaka ends up being very good like he should be. His splitter will be one of the best pitches in baseball.

Hopefully in 6 months you and I are laughing our asses off at Matt Garza being called a better signing.

I think Tanaka will be a better pitcher. Even without Tanaka. There is Bronson Arroyo, Ervin Santana, and Ubaldo Jimenezz who can all be better signings than Garza.

In six months nothing will have changed. In six years Tanaka will still be getting paid on his nonsensical deal.

Nothing surprising about Yankee homers talking up their pretty new toy.
