Meh, it's 2 months away. Stuff like this rarely seems to carry over more than a week.

Although, if it means the Isles are completely drained for the following day, or the Penguins fall into an unenviable 1st round playoff matchup, I'm all for it.

Hope that's not completely true on behalf of I'm looking forward to the next rags flyers game. :)

alright so i was laughing at the pens earlier, mostly because of the score (i wasn't watching).. but wow.. just watched all the fights (thanks Hawaii, rep coming).. things that i take away from this, huge increase in respect for Goddard, leaving the bench there is exactly what he should've done.. brent johnson is an animal, probably would've won the fight anyway..

and the isles are a bunch of thugs.. the intent on the talbot sucker punch was classless, but more than that, gilles should be shot multiple times.. are you fuckin serious? charge, jump, elbow, right to the head of tangradi and then he punches him a few times, and as if that wasn't enough he taunts him from the runway? i see why you guys think martin will get the gate for the year, but IMO gilles' actions are more deserving of the season-long suspension.. and the fact that you can make a case for 2 season-long suspensions is just horrific

games like this are why fighting will eventually be banned in the NHL.. thank you islanders.

Yeah, I do. As I recall, he was given a penalty. A slash isn't a big deal, I'm not calling for Tavares' head (at the time I thought he broke him, so therefore I was...), just saying the pxp guys were sort of jubilant about it. Not that Steiggy is any better...he's just a moron though.

Le tang is a diving, faking scumbag, who has his share of dirty hits. The slash from Tavares was a penalty but Letang fakes it.

Never IN MY LIFE (11 years of playing competitive hockey and getting close to 30 years of watching it) have I seen a player start skating in circles because one of his legs was seriously hurt. What a joke!! If your leg is really hurt you just fall down. Go back to Stevie Y's knee completely locking up in the playoffs of '98 (I think) and he still makes generally a straight line to the bench.

LOL at Letang (the only Penguin I actually really dislike other than Cooke). He gets 9.9/10 for creativity, 0/10 for being a stand up hockey player.

I watched most of the game and I saw all the skirmishes. What the Isles did was a little much and pretty bush league. I'm just waiting to see how many games some of those thugs are going to get suspended for.

There is another thing I wanted to point out though and that's the Pittsburgh commentators, especially Steigerwald. My god is he bad. Does he even think about what he's saying before he says it? There were too many things that he said for me to list them all but he could honestly get fined for some of the things he said about the Isles. Yeah, the Isles were thugs and deserved some criticism but he he took it way too far...

He's already passed Derek Roy as the biggest diver/faker in the league in my book.

And on top of that he's had many questionable hits which makes me dislike him even more. The one on Spezza was about as dirty as they come but that's nothing new for Letang. I hope somebody teaches him a lesson but I have a feeling he's not going to change.

If the goalie doesnt want to go he has the right to leave his mask on to be honest I would have more respect for the guy taking a dive or turtling than a goon coming off the bench and throwing punches at an already engaged man. Goddard also didnt need to throw repeated sucker punches in order to protect his goalie he could have just as easily restrained the man.to me what Goddard did was worse than the sucker punch on Talbot

WOW! Really?!?

Do you realize Haley had literally just finished his second fight of the nite, against talbot? He was supposed to be escorted off the ice by any of the officiating crew, except they let him skate all the way from the corner boards, across his blue line, the red line and all the way into the Pens end to.... fight a goalie.

A career goon from the AHL doesn't get to take liberties on a goal-tender. Unless said goalie is ron hextall, and it's 1982, this shit doesn't happen anymore. Godard will pay for his actions, but at least they were honorable. You don't let ahl thugs attack your goal-tender. Haley had no business being in another fight.
No excuse for the refs to not have control of a goon like that at the end of a fight.

This, x100. AHL punks do not belong in the NHL. Also, I have a feeling that whatever salary Godard loses will be comped to him by teammates, the organization and hell maybe even his captain.

I just watched the highlights on Sportscenter again and this just disgusts me. After the Olympics, there was a real shot to get some national attention for hockey in the States. Now, I doubt it. Thanks AHL garbage. It is sad to say this but Hayley and Martin and Gilles just undid all of the work that Crosby, Ovechkin, Miller, Parise, Luongo, Kane, Toewes, Lidstrom and countless other fantastic, hard hitting, hard playing hockey players did in the Olympics, winter classics and national games to bring the game out of it's steretype.

Fucking fantastic....another decade of versus, and ghey NBA all over ESPN.....

Urkie, I will come to Roy's defense again here. I know once a player gets labeled a diver or whiner or whatever it's hard to shake that reputation. A couple of years ago I hated Roy for diving but he has since stopped and I have not seen him take a dive in well over a year and a half and has not received one diving penalty for almost two years. The reason for that? He stopped the diving.

In fact a couple of weeks before he was hurt and ended his season I posted on this site in a topic "Who is your teams MVP so far" I said for the Sabres you could make a strong argument for Roy. He has become a solid two way player works the PP and PK and was leading the team in scoring when he was injured.

I would have agreed with your assessment as a lot of Sabres fans would have two years ago but not anymore.

I have an idea to help stop the crap that happened in the Pens V Islanders game. If a player gets suspended for the type of crap that went on the team he plays for should NOT be allowed to "call up" a player from the minors to replace him for the duration of the suspension.

Let these idiots have to answer to their OWN team mates that will need to play with a short bench because they want to act like jerks. Sometimes locker room justice is very effective.

All of these are very good points. What does suspending Gillies or Haley accomplish. It certainly does not affect the Islanders on-ice product. In fact, it probably helps it. There needs to be some kind of organizational punishment for stuff like this. Take away draft picks or something.

I hope that the majority of people are intelligent enough to discriminate between the great things of hockey (the speed, skill level etc.) from the not so attractive aspects of the game (line brawls, sucker punches etc.). Unfortunately, melees like last night Pens - Isles game will happen from time-to-time. The media will lap it up and milk it for all it's worth, but in time this will become just a blip on the radar.

From what I read that 46 put down, i believe he is talking about the casual fans that are being drawn into the game with players like Ovie, Crosby, Toews, Malkin, Kane, Kesler, Sedins etc. Not fans of the game that have been here for 20+ years, already. I would have been embarrassed to have my nephew (11 yrs old) watching that game with me, last nite. He and I watch a lot of hockey, together, and that one would have been tough to explain to a kid.

This type of press pushes new fans of the game, away. It becomes more about neanderthals and less about super-stars, looking like hockey did before the lock-out. The NHL would benefit a lot with a new TV deal that would be available to a broader market. This type of press doesn't help make that a reality.

Line brawls and goalie fights have a place in the game (see the Bruins/Habs game earlier this week), but this was just garbage.

Also to the Derek Roy comments. lest we forget Foopa is back in the league...

Well after barely paying attention to anything good, ESPN will probably be all over the events of this game. They ignore milestones, great games, and records but will have a panel on 'is the game too violent' after something bad happens. With friends like ESPN one doesn't need enemies. Its a piece of shit network.

I doubt that Dash was excluding casual fans when he mentioned the part about the majority of people. Even casual fans (you would hope) would have the intelligence to differentiate the good that happens in the NHL every night, from the bad like last night which may happen a few times a year tops

Problem is that the NHL is trying to attract fans that have the average intelligence of an NBA fan (no offense to NBA fans here)

And that was kinda my point. Those types of fans don't understand a game like last nite. And, during this week when ESpeon and the like hype the ever living shat out of this debacle, it will only make it look worse. And those types of fans will eat it up, because they don't know any better.

I am not sure sending tough guys out to fight non fighters at the end of the game has a place like at the end of the Habs-Bruins game.

Boychuk going after Spacek who just couldnt back away fast enough.
Thornton going after Hamrlik is real fair.
McQuaid going after a prone Pacioretty with 35 seconds left was pretty stupid.

I guess it was 'to send a message' but the Bruins had won the game and already pushed the Habs around, I think the message was sent.

Also if Moen grabs an unwilling Ryder and starts hitting him I am not sure that really sends a message.
