I get that, but Matt Flynn proves desperate teams will overpay, and the Jets are desperate.
Sorry man, but your comparison of Mettenberger being worth a 2nd rd pick to the Jets signing a QB to a 1 year contract that is only $60k guaranteed, is asinine.

If they can't groom Mariota properly or he ends up injured they're losing a lot more money though. From what I've seen from Mariota he isn't ready yet and tossing him out there right away doesn't seem like a good idea. He does a decent job without any pressure coming but if it does come he doesn't know what to do at all.

I think we both know Mariota is not ready, Whiz probably will give him a blend of what he's done well in a college and some safe patterns...playaction, etc. to get him through his rookie year.

Yes, it would be best to start Mett for the 1st 6 to 8 games and turn over the reins and if Mett plays okay...he solidifies a higher draft pick next year...but, this decision was made on draft day. They left the arguably the best player in the draft on the board to take a QB...they're going to play him early.

You lost me, but that's cool...I've been worse than asinine.

I dont think 2nd round picks for a QB is a thing anymore. Bradford was really more of a straight trade for Foles and his contract.

Mettenberger worth a 2nd rd pick? According to who? In 7 games last year, he had a QBR of 23.1 and a 59% completion percentage.

The Mettenberger love in here strong because he went against the 2's of the Rams who looked like dogshit last night.

MM went against that D-line and handled everything just fine. LOL I just don't get the MM hate at all. Kid is gonna be good.

Mettenberger had a QB rating of 83.4. Going into his last game he led all rookie QB's in QB rating. Where are you getting this 23.1 ????

He set records in two of the six games he played in. In his very first game he threw for 300 yards. Against Pitt an 80 yard bomb and a 110 QB rating set a new MNF record. He threw for nearly 400 yards at Philly completing 8 passes over 20 yards. I watched the guy he was pretty good for a rookie great arm, can complete passes all over the field, full of confidence. Been watching this game a long time and Mettenberger is legit there is a reason the media is making a big deal out of it. He could play as a starter in this league.

For all of the folks who aren't familiar with Mettenberger or really haven't watched him play here are his highlights from last year. Watch this and tell me that he didn't do good for a rookie QB.....

Zach Mettenberger

NFL Total Quarterback Rating - National Football League - ESPN

QBR is Total QB rating, which
QB Rating is Passer rating.

The following lack-luster QB's had better QBR's that Mettenberger in 2014:
Austin Davis
Kyle Orton
Geno Smith
Bryan Hoyer
Derek Carr
Josh McCown
Blake Bortles

He threw 27 of 41 for 300 yards with 2TD and 1INT his first game against Houston setting a franchise rookie QB record. He threw an 80 yard bomb against Pitt and overall completed 15 of 24 passes for 263 yards with 2TD and 1INT,110 QB rating setting a MNF rookie record for QB. Against Philly he threw for 345 yards including eight passes over twenty yards with 2TD and 1INT and an 88 QB rating. In his fifth game at Houston he completed 13 of 19 passes completing 68 percent of his passes for 184 yards for 1TD and 1INT and a 95 QB rating. He only played in six games but played good IMO for a rookie QB on a shitty squad. Late in the season in Mett's last game he had an 87.8 passer rating top among all rookie QB's in 2014. His last game against the NY Giants he left with an injury playing behind an offensive line consisting of four guys who were backups and only one starter.

In 7 games last year, Mettenberger averaged 1.14 TD and 1 INT per game. In those 7 games, the Titans lost by more than 2 TD's in all but 1 game.

I go by the QB rating which was 83.4 Geno Smith,Bortles,McCown,Davis none of those guys are better now that is a joke. I've watched all those guys play Mettenberger is better than the names i just mentioned. Orton,Hoyer and Carr i'll give you those and say they could be a bit better.

The team had a league worst defense. No running game,no offensive line, etc. For a rookie the guy did well in spite of all of the shortcomings i saw it with my own eyes. The guy has talent. Stay tuned.......

For comparisons:
2014:

Austin Davis: 2,000 yds, 12 TD, 9 INT, 63.4% completions, 85.1 rating. (10 games)

Zach Mettenberger: 1,400 yds, 8 TD, 7 INT, 59.8% completions, 83.4 rating. (7 games)

Mettenberger may end up being a good QB, but stats wise, he hasn't proved anything.

Passer Rating is objectively better than Total QBR. ESPN is the only one that uses it.

Sitting pretty... yes

But both are far from polished products. Mettenberger should be the starter. Just my opinion, but the Titans were idiots for drafting Mariota. They could have built around Mett and been looking much stronger this season.

He hasn't proven to be consistent. You look at one game and he looks like a 1st round talent...you look at another and he looks like what he was...a late round pick, but that's every rookie QB.

I thought he proved enough for TN to take the big DL @ 2 or trade the pick and pick up another QB later in the draft...I just didn't/don't see Mariota being that much better even though his draft position was.

I can agree with that. I felt for sure TN would have traded back and stock piled picks since they need help just about everywhere.
