I get it, and I'm letting emotion sway my opinion. But still...
Mattingly said he felt Chen was running out of gas and felt like his SP couldn't go any longer so he took him out. There we go.... he knows his team more than anybody.

Also it seemed like Chen didn't protest much so he probably knows it too.

That was a heck of an awkward ending. A debacle by the Umpiring crew and it could've cost the Nats. It was a clear strikeout! That extra pitch or pitches matters.

On a night when the M's got 1 hit, I can't harp on the starting pitcher for our side. They would have lost if Paxton was on the mound. It just wasn't their night.

For sure, the O stunk tonight. Gallardo still sucks.

As an aside did anyone hear Dave Simms in maybe the 6th inning talk about if the M's could come back and win today and get the win tomorrow they would head out on the road at .500? Seriously??? You're down 4 getting no hit and you're nonchalantly talking about winning not only tonight but also tomorrow? :L:L:L

As surprising as it is to see a pitcher get pulled from a no-hitter for non-injury reasons, it made sense to do it. He was at 100 pitches after 7 innings and around 21 of those were in the 7th inning alone. His previous high pitch count for the season was something like 86. His pitch count in his last start was somewhere in the 50's. It's not Mattingly's job to preserve a no-hitter for a pitcher if doing so means significantly exceeding his season high pitch count and risking an injury to a fatigued pitcher. I think that if he'd been more efficient in the 7th inning, Mattingly might have been willing to let him go for it in the 8th and 9th, but clearly he saw Chen's pitch count in the 7th as a sign that he was tired and Chen didn't seem to put up a fight to stay in. Mattingly had to make a call that benefited his team in the long run, not one pitcher in the short run.

I know it was 100 pitches, but it's still wild to see a guy get pulled when he has a no hitter going. You would have to taze me to get me off that mound.

Gallardo was awful the first 3 innings but did settle in a bit. He was also the victim of some pretty weak hits on a few occasions. A few feet here and there and a lot of those hits are taken away. But such is baseball, and he's certainly the weak link in the rotation.

Let's go, Felix.

That's crazy.... CAN WE STOP LETTING UMPS CALL EVERYTHING NOW!? The computer technology is 99.9% accurate. Put a fucking earpiece in the umps ear and if it fails or falters then he can make the call otherwise.

Yes this would take away framing some which is a valued catcher trait, but I'd rather have that gone and at least correctly called pitches... no more arguing with the home plate ump, no more stupid ejections because the ump is butt hurt, and less delay of game from said bitching.

I've been preaching this for the last couple of years. Enough with the human error calling balls and strikes, it's unnecessary! For a game that takes so much prided in it's statistics they sure do leave a lot open for question. The technology is there, USE IT!!!!

Theres also a reason why they flirted with a combined no hitter again. Strong pen and Chen did last just 3 iL

In one of his starts this year he lasted only 3ip while giving up 6er. Dont think they wanna risk that happening again for personal stats. Trust me, i was shocked too when they removed him but this is what the mlb is all about now. Saving starters arm while constructing a strong pen to go along with it.

I get the fact how teams are doing it, but this decision is still gonna get under the skin of the pitcher... It's not very often you take a no no deep into the game... 6 outs away up 5 ... lol, man, you gotta give him the chance there, he's went over 100 pitches like 52 times in his career... I can assure you players in that locker room are a little ticked off, Chen also...

Motter better be working on hitting the other way because that's all he's getting right now. There's the pitching adjustment. Time to see the hitter adjust in response.

At the moment the clear winner in the trade with Arizona are the M's. Haniger will be a star.

When Segura comes back and if he can be as productive as he was before he got injured, and Haniger can maintain what hes doing or even 80% of what he is doing, i think you have to consider the Mariners overwhelming winners in this trade

Pretty fitting for Ichiro to hit a home run.

I heard he can hit a home run any time he wanted to.

Felix was a bit off today but bats picked him up, which is not a storyline we've seen too much in his career.

6-3 home stand. Could have been better I supposed, but that's definitely tolerable. Now to keep the O rolling on the road, and being above .500 after this trip is well within reach.

Not bad after 2-8.
