But why would you want one of those unknows IF they could actually sign Sasaki? That I don't understand. But I already gave you my replacements scenarios. Spend the saved money on a FA and have Hancock/Evans/Garcia fight it out for the 5th starter.
I’m not disagreeing with you I’m just trying to see what the difference is with your trading him predicated on signing Sasaki vs my scenario. If they sign Sasaki, IMO then you don’t trade Castillo, you trade Gilbert cause you can get a less expensive option to Bregman or Walker. The M’s could get a Mayo and Cowser for Gilbert instead of a Sasaki and Bohm for Castillo
I obviously would prefer Sasaki over Hancock/Evans/Garcia. But what I’m saying is I don’t get the thinking of if they trade Castillo to save money then that should also be followed up with signing Sasaki and not spending it on a free agent. I guess I think signing a FA bat is a lot more important. But why would you want one of those unknows IF they could actually sign Sasaki? That I don't understand.
And that is fine, but you are trading a better pitcher for prospects. I don't mind prospects, but a team so close to the playoffs should never rely on prospects to put them over. They can use prospects as filler on a roster if they have solid starters at other positions which we don't. I guess I am old and still prefer the best SP's on my team which I don't think Castillo is. I don't know if I would have even used him last year if we made the playoffs.
So question is, does Sasaki make you better than with Gilbert? Do two prospects make you better than Hoerner and who they throw out there at 3B?
I like your idea if we are building for 2026/2027, but not sure how a guy with a handful of AB's helps us now and a guy who plays OF when we have 4 of them already? If you could get them for Castillo, then I would throw a parade, but for Gilbert gives me a pause. And yes, I realize Gilbert may walk in a few years.
So, like your idea but not sure this is the time for it. Of course, if we aren't really going for it like the last couple years then you might as well make your deal and play for the years I said when we have our guys up as well.
Normally .I would agree .but Gilbert.I obviously would prefer Sasaki over Hancock/Evans/Garcia. But what I’m saying is I don’t get the thinking of if they trade Castillo to save money then that should also be followed up with signing Sasaki and not spending it on a free agent. I would prefer the Mariners to get MLB talent as well. But to me, if they trade a valuable asset (any of the pitchers) then it needs to be for a valuable asset. Mayo obviously hasn’t proven anything but Bohm thus far is Kelenic where he has had 2 great months then is nothing. Won’t pretend to know anything other than stats on him but there is a reason Philly chose to basically ice him in the playoffs. And a Bohm is basically the only guy out there besides Bregman. I like Hoerner too but 3B is much more of a need. Maybe somehow they could get Hoerner, get Bohm and trade JP and have Young/Rivas play SS.
I’m not sure on who is better between Sasaki and Gilbert. But one thing we do know is that Gilbert is going to get traded before he becomes a FA and his value is higher the cheaper he is. Mayo and Cowser are a gamble for sure but they fill needs they have and it still allows for the M’s to do the 3 way deal to get Hoerner. And they could still sign Sasaki. I’m basing all of this on I don’t think they can trade Castillo and not eat some of the contract.
I say Cowser so then they can use the DH with rotating Randy/Julio/Robles. Cause eventually we all need to come to realization that Julio playing CF isn’t good for the team. I know that sounds dumb because he is a gold glove caliber CF, but he gets hurt every year and less wear and tear on his body the better. Even when he is struggling it is better for him to be in the lineup as opposed to getting physical therapy.
